ATI crashes prices on newX1600

256 Bit memory ?

ATI ISSUED a cheerful press release which publicly claimed a heavy price reduction on the new X1600 series. As of now, the new Radeon X1600XT with 256 Megs of GDDR-3 video memory is priced at $179 or Euro, down from $249/Euro.

This is a big dent in price and lowering itself under Nvidia's radar named 6800GS, which demolished the Red Team's board in previous reviews.

Now, the product is somewhat equally priced to GeForce 6600GT with 256 Megs of GDDR-3 memory, which are rare as hen's teeth. However, we hear news of Nvidia's new MSRP of $199/Euro for its 6800GS, in both AGP and PCIe version, whenever the AGP version arrives.

The lower part of mainstream market is covered by the new Radeon X1600Pro, which is available for 129 dollars/Euros if the model is equipped with 256MB of DDR-II memory.

If you're wondering why we keep using the NEW in front of every X1600, there wouldn't be a bit of a difference if there wasn't a small quote hidden inside the press release:

"The new Radeon X1600 XT also features 256-bit ring-bus memory controller and support for up to 512 MB of RAM."

So folks, if you have bought the 128-bit Radeon X1600 product, you're free to yank like a donkey. Altough, this scenario is exactly what we have written several times ever since the introduction of X1600. The product got smackered down in tests and ATi did a "Santa, I've been a good boy this year" spin. Which surely, raised performance by a mile? We're expecting a review sample, if ATI can spare one. µ

Thats strange... the X1600 always had a 256bit ring bus arch. The external mem interface is 128bit and i'm guessing its still 128bit. Nothing new here other than the price drop.

lol ! another idiocracy by Inq ??

Well, i havent really seen any of the lower end card's benches.

Would be nice, if some1 can post a link.

Anyways, back to the topic, great news for low end card buyers.

But till now i havent seen anyone with x600's and x1600's except in Dell machines :P.

I had a doubt that any1 buys em. Lol.

^ You .. you.. :@ .. hehe just kidding

Oh I know it aint great, but I dont game much :D

I liked my 9600 Pro and wanted something similar when I switched, plus had run out of cash.. so got the X600 Pro !

Yeah, my nieghbour has an X600XT, and it can't even play FIFA2006 @ 1024x768 with max details, so it really is bad...

The X1600XT price drop is interesting, I just *hope* it can beat an 6800GS..;)

Not a chance ....The 6800GS has double the memory bandwidth of the X1600XT,it beats the X1600XT by double-digit margins in all cases and when overclocked, well, lets just say they fall in entirely different categories.

who indeed :ohyeah: ?? The ATI's lower cards have always been weak....in fact Nvidia always seems to get a better market...
remember 6600GT had virtually no competition, just like X850XT was better than a 6800U.......
Only sore point is ATI's generally cost more due to shortages maybe thats only a prob in India but still grates....man I paid 36K for an Asus X800Xt, and while the card is a real beauty, rashi had quoted some 47K in some mag (don't remember)...they wanted 40K for it, so i bided my time and eventually they settled...:P
If the X1800XT is anywhere around 35K even the 256 MB one I think it'll be a steal...wat with 625/1500 speeds who'll complain??
