ATI won't manage a simultaneous launch of its two new product lines after all.
The original plan was to launch its new Radeon X1900 (R580) cards together with its new chipset codename RD580-based Crossfire Radeon Xpress 3200 boards.
The graphics chipster will launch the X1900 cards tomorrow but the motherboards will be on hold for at least a few more weeks, we learn.
In the meantime, ATI recommends using Asus' Crossfire motherboard, based on the RD480 chipset as this one is stable and hunky-dory. Others should be fine but Asus has won too many hearts with this implementation, including ours. It just works so well. Your USB performance might not be at the top of the tree but that's our only quibble. It uses a ULI chipset that should be better than the company's SB450 anyroadmap.
We saw R580-based boards up and running on ATI's booth at CES 2006 but we'll have to wait to see them in our shops and homes. We know that some companies are finalizing their own RD580 motherboard designs but they won't be done before tomorrow that’s for sure.
You should see many RD580 motherboards at Cebit in early March although the boards should be selling even earlier than that.
