According to information site 4gamer who put their hands on an AMD's Roadmap (see below), the next-generation AMD GPU would be known as the Southern Islands code name. It suggests that the name of commercial déclinées graphics cards will be, if AMD continues to appoint its products with the same logic, Radeon HD 6000.

The Southern Islands (Islands of the South range would be available in five GPU (whose code names are the names of Islands):

* Caicos scheduled for the end of 2010 that would be the successor of Cedar (Radeon HD5450)

* Turks planned for the end of 2010 that would be the successor of Redwood (HD55xx/HD5670)

* Scheduled for early 2011, which is the successor of Juniper (Radeon HD57xx) Barts

* Cayman scheduled for early 2011, which is the successor of Cypress (Radeon HD58xx)

* Caribbean scheduled for early 2011, which is the successor of Hemlock (Radeon HD5970)

This new range of GPU Southern Island would be burned in 40 nm and AMD would put emphasis on the tesselation to catch up on Nvidia and its Fermi cards.

nice names of the chips..

caribbean, cayman... love them...

Id like to see, how much of a performance difference will be there between the turks and the current HD 5670...

Isnt this too soon...wont the guys who just got a HD 5850 or a HD 5870 be angry??

Should now see some decline in Evergreen prices.. Fermi failed to cause a dent & prices are still high.... ;)

well it is not early if there is one year gap between series..as generally it is.

would be intersting to see if the green bridade has anything to offer with regards to the fermi ...with a 485s and 475s...

ATI is really rocking, with crisp well timed GPU refreshes, and the consumers keep lapping them up. This will be their third 40nm release, and each time round they are refining the product. The different price points of each model within a line up give immense choice to the consumers. Heck Xfire has become so common now. Every other guy has it, brings a smile to my face. I think they always place their 2nd most powerful GPU strategically with reference to price point vs. performance. See the HD4850 and HD5850.

But what worries me, when will the games catch up to the hardware. There is hardly anything out there which really is harnessing the full power of the current HD58xx series. Okay, Metro 2033 is resource heavy, but still manageable at beginner level HD. Not all play eye-affinity...!

this time it's more than one year, remember, August 08, HD4800, September 09, HD5800, Jan-Mar 10 HD6800 ?
its because of poor GPU's from nVidia and now AMD taking its time to refine the products. ;)

Lol refine their products , they have been trying to do that ever since they were called ATI , but as usual its like their driver support is competing with BSNL to see who can provide the worse service. Xfire or a dual card is just not an option with ATI because on that score they have BSNL beat :P

5870 seems underpowered now , the problems with the 4xx series are well documented but if they can tweak and fix this the next gen should be typical nvidia which I cant wait wait for sigh .

ATI to launch NEXT generation in November
Graphics card vendors are expected to start selling AMD's next-generation GPU (Southern Islands) in November with AMD to officially announce the series in October, according to sources from graphics card players.

To defend its market share, AMD plans to cut prices for its ATI Radeon HD 5000-series GPUs in the near future. The action also serves as preparation for the upcoming Southern Islands GPUs, the sources noted.

AMD originally planned to have its next-generation GPUs using 32nm process and codenamed the chips Northern Islands, but Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) skipped its 32nm R&D for GPUs and advanced directly to 28nm R&D. In response AMD adjusted its plans and decided to continue adopting a 40nm process, while changing the product's codename to Southern Islands, the sources explained.

AMD declined the opportunity to respond to this report saying it cannot comment on unannounced products.

That is a huge question, one of the reasons I stopped spending so much on computer hardware. I might harped it a lot of times, but I have a 3 year low end system with a mid end card of 2008, I am able to play almost all games at mid to high settings on full HD resolution :P You have the consoles to thank for :)
