Re: Ati Sapphire 4860 512MB HD is better than Ati Sapphire 4850 512MB HD

I am confused... I make out that you had 4850 512mb earlier, then it got bad, and in replacement you got a 4860 512mb.. Right?? And you want to know which one is better....If this is the scenario then :

Frankly speaking, haven't seen a 4860 even in my dreams, but upon some search on google, I found it to be a step forward than 4850... So its not bad that you got a 4860 in replacement. :)

If its vice versa, means you had a 4860 and in replacement is a 4850, then the performance will drop a bit, but still wont make any difference to you.

Never heard of an HD 4860 before. Also try contacting Sapphire and ask for a current gen card as replacement even if market price is lower than for which you paid to buy the old one.

I can see that the SP has bee reduced to 640(700 mhz) from 800(650 mhz) for 4860 from 4850, but the memory has been improved to GDDR5 vs GDDR3 for 4850. So 4860 should perform better than 4850 at lower resolutions upto 1680*1050, but 4850 should take the lead at 1920*1080. Also seems like one hell of an OCer. It even surpasses HD 4890 if OCed to good extend.

Try getting any newer generation of card if it's possible. Otherwise as being with with 4850 you will not notice any much of a difference.

4860 was HD4850 with GDDR5 Ram slapped on it

it was made only by Palit, ignoring the T&C set by AMD and Palit got banned as a result from AMD Resellers group

It is known to be very close to HD4870 in performance due to Higher memory speeds and stock overclock

but was too pricey for good

IMO just get and HD6750 as replacement

they shouldn't ask for extra cash for this

and its basically the same as HD4860 :)

ATi 4860 is something ATi had to release to end desputes on 4950's with DDR5

ATi originally introduced 4850 with DDR3 and 4870 with DDR5... but Palit overlook's ATi's guidelines and released 4850 with DDR5..

this lead to conflicts. adding to poor QC on PALIT cards... ATi discontinued with PALIT and launched 4850 with DDR5 under 4860 tag.

It was too late to make any market presence or sense though.
