informed its partners that it has a R580+ card up at its corporate sleeves. It is nothing more than 80 nanometre R580 core, but this shrink will make the chip cooler, smaller and cheaper to produce. ATI will probably be able to get some higher clocks out of it as well.

Looks like delayed Vista means more business with current gen Gfx.

X1950XTX will be an Overdose.

Lol.

I think ATi will just replace the current gen 90nm X1900's with the 80nm Counter part. Saves their Money too :bleh:

Wasnt there a report earlier that the 80nm process was having a few problems and was gonna be delayed? I think that was on the inq itself.

UPDATE: ATI R580+ supports GDDR 4
As per INQ
WE FOUND out one key thing about the new R580+ chip. We gave you most of the details here already, but we can now confirm that ATI's new chip can and will support GDDR4.

All cards after the R520 could support GDDR 4, but obviously the next generation GDDR 4 memory will simply work better with the new chips. The new Radeon X1000 generation memory controller has the support but obviously R580+ will have even better and more polished support.
I think this is good news, but it look like ATI want its R600 with Vista only [Q1'07]. This means ATI may miss out on regular Holiday sales at end of the year. Kinda Confusing... better wait n watch :D

why cant they release the cards at the usual time?? Like in Nov, dec of this year..... let Vista come next year...

I dont understand.... I know DX10 will be mainly pushed by Vista. But that does not mean that all these companies should hold back their launches only for Vista....

Even after Vista comes out, many people wont buy Vista. they will use XP and wait for a few months for the bugs in Vista to be sorted out. So, what is everyone waiting for?? Even the Crysis next gen game.... I know DX 10 works only in Vista. But majority of people wont be using Vista with the top end cards.... they will be using wioth DX 9 cartds and XP.

^r600 is optimised specially for vista and dx10, it will probably work slower or even worse under Winxp and dx9 [speculation]. That might be the reason ATi is holding back. Nv has opted for a hybrid approach for the g80 so they might release their chips on schedule.

@ Nikhil, I think apart from the technical needs... they dont keep us in mind... I mean not right away... its the Dells, HPs and VoodooPCs which they want... "Confirmed Order". Look at PhysX cards... already available from top SIs.

ON a low quality screenshot you can easily confuse the number eight and nine and that is exactly what happened. After a more detailed shot I actually learned that we all made a mistake claiming that the next generation ATI's graphic card will end up as a die shrink.

Well it won't. We learned from a multiple sources that the next R580+ is still 90 nanometre. It won't be a die shrink at all but ATI will redesign the chip and make it more powerful than it is now.
The Inq linq
I know its late... and Its got to be one HOT chip.
Yeah a let down... but the thing is its still going to be faster... bad it will still require the Cable mess for CF operations... overall we can hope for faster SM-3 performance, keeping future games in mind. Untill R600 can come out.
