Dual PCIe 16X get its name
WE RESOLVED another mystery of the graphics motherboard world. We can confirm that ATI's new chipset RD480 will be called Crossfire Xpress 3200.
The 3200 number is there because the chipset features 32 lanes for dual PCIe 16X graphic cards and the rest of the name is logical.
Motherboard manufacturers are making these boards as we speak and there should be some retail boards at launch time. The boards are scheduled for a double jeopardy launch with the new graphic chip R580, known as Radeon X1900XTX. If all goes well, we should see both of these products on 24th of January.
ATI did a good job with its first Crossfire boards while the second generation is expected to be even better. Many motherboard vendors are waiting to join the bandwagon with the new chipset. ATI will still use ULI south bridges or should we say motherboard manufacturers will still be able to buy them. ULI is now owned by Nvidia but it would not say no to the motherboard manufacturers when it comes to the chipset sales. ATI is working hard to release its SB600 Southbridge but this won't happen before April of May, if not even later. Until then you are stuck with either SB450 or ULIs 1575.
