Audio on TataSky - Convert 5.1 to 2.1

I have these Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers. The input is 3.5mm stereo male plug.
Right now I've connected it to the RCA sound outputs of TataSky stb via a 2 RCA to 3.5mm male connection. Problem is the sound is in Dolby 5.1 and the sound output of the back channels (being converted via stb) is very low. If I use a headphone to listen to the sound, the soundstage I get from the headphones is better than the soundstage I get from the speakers.

I was thinking of getting a cheap toslink to headphone convertor like the fiio d3. Will this make any difference to the output since the conversion will be made directly by the fiio d3 vs the stb? Will the 5.1 input get converted to stereo properly via this device?

Edit: Not the D03 but the D07. Seems D03 does not support Dolby source.

The conversion will be to stereo so obviously you wont get the 5.1 effect. But the conversion is clean and audio quality is maintained.
YGPM.

I have D03k...It decodes only high quality LPCM Audio - Yes... it can't decode Dolby Digital but D07 can - but in no way you can get 5.1 any of these.

You may need additional Headphone Amp such as E11k to Amp up the Headphone Signal.

An update - bought one of those cheap Chinese Toslink to RCA convertor. It only converts PCM via toslink input. The sound quality is very soft compared to when I had directly connected my speakers to the TataSky stb. One plus point is, the sound loudness seems to be flattened out and volume is leveled between all channels. I opened the box, since warranty was just one month seller warranty. The box uses some Cirruslogix chip to do the conversion.

Final thoughts is - I prefer the TataSky stb output to this. I think I'll use this for a few days more before putting it in storage.
