Audio/Vid editing s/w suggestion for dummies.

So I recently got a sudden urge to learn audio and video editing softwares.
I'm a newbie.
My hobbies when it comes to image edits: taking screenshots, using powerpoint (strange right?), paint and gimp.
What I would mostly do: Cut and stitch videos. Make AMV vids. However I hope to start learning about the more complicated tools.
Desktop recording tool. Please don't suggest camstudio. I faced multiple issues using it.
Also why can't/doesn't vlc record subtitles? It can record those subtitles which only come "attached" with the media file. Not the ones where we have to manually go to "Subtitle>Select." So I'll also need a software which can let me record media files being played with the subtitle. Another thing vlc recorded-vids are not in proper sync with the audio.

Can you guys recommend me some softwares? Please suggest both free and paid ones.

Gimp is somewhat advanced image editing tool .. you may feel overwhelmed with it's clunky interface. Better start with Paint . Net

For recording desktop use Rylstim Screen Recorder or BB FlashBackExpress.

For video encoding purpose try freemake video converter ... it's has option for hard encoding subtitles into video from external file. For video editing use MS Movie Maker.

I have those two.
I'll try out the others. Are they freewares or paid? They seem to be free. Do you have personal experiences using them?

If you want to hardcode the subtitles.I would suggest AviSynth based XviD4PSP.You'll have to re-encode the entire file.It supports subs in .ass, . srt format.

You mean I need to add the srt files? Subs do not come separately (but I can dis/able it) but vlc doesn't record the subs so I dont know why. Another thing, the subs which come pre-added to the media gets recorded.

are you talking about a video file or a DVD/ BR movie disc ? anyway, VLC is not not the best option to record video .. you need to use video transcoder app and you can get matching subtitle file for most of the movies.

some video files comes with hard coded subs and those which needs a srt/ sub file for displaying subtitle can be easily encoded into a hard coded movie using freemake video converter. Once encoded with appropriate subtitle file you won't need it again. I use this if I need to watch movies on mobile device.

Bumping this thread.
So I have these anime vids (with subtitles which can be enabled/disabled) and when I uploaded them on youtube the subs do not appear. Can anyone tell me what went wrong? How do I put the subs in the vids permanently?
downloading freemake[DOUBLEPOST=1398997870][/DOUBLEPOST]@topgear thanks a ton dude. Loving this freemake sw. Beginners-friendly. And its also free. Hope its not too early for me to give positive response lol.
BTW I asked for freewares because my friends get paranoid when I tell them that I use the *ahem* copies. Yeah they use only legit copies. However after using this sw I feel the need to make a donation to it no matter how small. I will keep on using this software. Thanks once again. :D

Whats its pros and advantages over the Freemake?
also do you know why I cannot play some audio files on my phone? Many of the files which i converted from video using total video converter dont play on my phone. In fact some of them dont even appear on my phone! All files are playable on pc though.

The biggest advantage I've noticed is speed and more options to play with. Also all the options are easy to access.

Your phone model and file format ?

Compare the bot rate, channel and frequency details between and playable and non playing mp3 file.
Try renaming the mp3 file that's not playing.
Try updating phone FW or better try with a different music player.
