First of all. I do a search in TE, "good firewall" and the first result is "The Photography Thread" :| Pls do soemthing regarding search.

OK, i always had this winhynnmmk something running in my comp, tehr was prog nowadays like 1dc2323 something.

Was never really bothered by them, but this new thing is preventing me from opening many sites like orkut or yahoo mobile. I open windows/system32, there are atleast 10,000 virus files :S so decided I have to do something.

Now the question COmes. Do I need a firewall or an AV? I dont put anything from a pen drive or cd rom nowadays, all my data I get are from reliable TE members. SO no question of viruses coming from media.

I'm not really keen on getting a AV, they are usually nagging me all the time like scan this or scan that :| I'm already fed up with such nonsense in my office comp, slowing down everything. Firewall, yes I'm feeling I need it. But need your opinion anyways.

No u dont need firewall. Install AVAST or Alvira with AD-Ware, run complete scan. AVAST will let you scan entire hard drive after REBOOT.

OK. The only viruses I got are thru the network, not thru media, thats why I said I might need a firewall. I cant be bothered to run AV all the time whenveer I get this attack :| Plus I believe that Prevention is better than cure.

If u believe in prevention is better you should have had a firewall installed already! Firewalls are not that good man, it will ask you YES OR NO for everyting you do! You want something like that? :cool2: All you need is a DEEP VIRUS SPYWARE ROOTKIT Scan! I forgot download AVG Anti-root Kit and SCAN entire hdd.

Over & out

sunnyboi, office comps have coporate antiviruses like mcafee/norton etc. These get selected for their anti-virus properties as well as the through n deep configuration/IT remote operation capabilities :P n with all that stuff involved to keep everything working fine over the whole network, it needs a lots of services, hence the bloat ;)

Get a decent antivirus like NOD-32, Avira Antivir (free) and it wont cause much of a drop anywhere. try it, u ll like it. + a anti-spywayre like spybot, it doesnt run in memory, u can launch it like once a week to run a scan.

N 1 firewall like zonealarm/comodo. Trust me, get these 3 things to be safe.

N prevention might be better tha cure, but whos got a 100% prevention rate? :bleh: Any website can be hacked, wat if its something u havent patched against, an OS exploit that tries downloading spyware/trojans etc? Prevention isnt 100% foolproof in the computer security world.

I too agree with techie opinion. No one can guarantee 100% security.

I use KIS07 as I consider it best,

Also using SpyBot Search & Destroy + Lavasoft Ad Aware for spyware removal.

Well since I have started using KIS07(NIS 2007 earlier) spybot and lavasoft results in Zero exploits.

Just a FYI take care when you set filter rule in Comodo it's very powerful. It's the best and brilliant freeware firewall available.

I am using the Zone Alarm Firewall , haven't had an issue with a virus for quite sometime now. Like sunny even i believe that AV programs are too much of a hassle to use. Even when i get a virus , i prefer to format my c drive so as to remove each and every trace of the virus. In my experience using free AV programs are never much of a help. They usually do remove the viruses but some traces of the virus are always left on the system.
