Everyone is familiar with the mods' warning "Please refrain from using SMS Lingo". And still people do use it, intentionally or to type fast within a short time. It would be a good option to have those SMS terms in a side panel (like the one with smileys) and automatically parse them into full phrases in the posts.

Some people also tend to change their signatures various times. It would be a good option to enable the user to create 4-5 signatures and save them in a panel in the edit signature page. Thus they can choose one of the saved signatures to use by just clicking on it. :)

hmm, Lingo replacement would be good, but I think we dont need that multiple signature saving system, It's fine right now.

Lingo to Proper english replacement can be done through Java script easily..

yeah I hv also seen many users using sms lingo. Its look very bad on forums.Plz refrain it.

What is hv and plz? Pot calling the kettle black?

I generally don't respond to posts with abbreviated language, somehow it seems the poster is not paying attention to the reply, the same way they don't pay attention to the post itself.

Sabby: What is 'please'? Pls? plz? Pleez? You see what you're asking for, as SMS language itself has no standard. Everybody spells differently.

I agree. Use of shortened and abbreviated english should be avoided. Even though we may mistakes with the grammar and syntax, but that does not mean we should start using weird language.

I believe we should stick to proper english to convey our thoughts.

Well, I didn't suggest to modify the contents of a post. I thought it would be better to have a panel consisting of those common SMS terms and when an user clicks on a object, the full form is inserted in the posted.

Let me give an example:

Notice the smiley panel right of the text box where we type to post (not in quick reply mode). If we want to use a smiley,
say " :@ ". What we do is just click on that symbol and the associated code ":" & "@" is inserted into our post. After submitting the post, it is parsed and the image for the smiley is shown.

Similarly, a panel consisting the most used words/phrases such as "As far as I know", "In my opinion" etc. will be at the left (or wherever the admins decide). To save the space, the shortened form may be displayed in the panel as "AFAIK","IMO" etc. Now if someone want to use on of those phrases, just click on the appropriate text/symbol and voila!

The signature portion is just a suggestion. If TE suffers from space shortage, it isn't necessary. Otherwise it would be a cool option. :)

P.S.- I had a heard time to figure out the meanings when I saw the "AFAIK","IMO" etc. for the first time (may be not here). I still don't understand what "OT" means. :P

^OT is short for Off Topic.. And these are not part of the general SMS lingo, rather special abbreviations developed for forums.

It is a lot faster to just type : @ than to go to 'advanced reply' and click on the smiley :P

AFAIK, IIRC, et al are *not* SMS lingo, but forum language. Newbies need to use Google to figure out the terms, there's a full directory of those things and they are accepted and with a specific standard (like LOL).

Anyway, there are many morons who will not heed it anyway, I don't see how a 'quick insert' panel will help. A dimwit is a dimwit, and no amount of help will save them. I just don't bother, preferring to spend my time helping people who actually care to address others properly.

^^ Not to mention, a headache reading those post. I think business writing should be made a compulsory subject in high schools. That form of writing is the most concise and easy to understand.

Agreed. A person posting in SMS lingo won't bother to look around in some panel.

We learn proper English writing in schools. But still people end up using SMS lingo. What they need to understand is forums are different from their chat/IM.

^^ Original Poster.

I hate SMS language, and I make it a point to respond in full english even in SMSes. And yeah, it is a PITA to try and understand the meaning of g8, f9 and other such nonsense.

On topic, I feel there is absolutely no need to implement SMS lingo parsing or whatever it is called. Let people take pains to post in full. It'll help them too.

Even I hate when people use chatting/SMS abbreviations on forums. I infact don't use abbreviations even on chat or SMSes. Rather, if you get used to T9 dictionary in your phone you will find that it is actually easier and faster to type full words than use lingos!

Of course I don't expect people to use the right punctuations too but at least they can refrain from posting such lingos. b miser at sum othr thin' dudes :P
