most people these days have single files of huge sizes (read hd rips).
my question is how do you guys take backups of these files on dvds? do you use dual layers? what about the ones of even greater size?

i was going to split-rar the files so i can burn them on dvds. i was worried if the quality of the videos is affected in anyway if i rar them? though i have seen them rar'ed in quite a few places, but still wasnt sure.

yes ... same i do ... rar spanning ... with no compression ( got no time for that ) ... but for mine OS iso,z

cost per GB for an HDD is coming too close to cost per GB on DVD.

say, a 500GB HDD for 2.7k.

cost per GB is: 5.4Rs.

cost per GB DVD 4GB avg Sony: 4.0 Rs

so HDD has terrific vfm, and it can be overwritten, uve 5 yrs warranty, no threats like scratches, write/read are 5x faster, and what more, no hastles of raring or extracting, just store tham and play instantly.

my choice wyd be DVD, though the overall cost for a 500GB wud be high @ 2.7k.

Verbs 50 pack costs abt 550 (best media atm avbl in India)
cost per GB - 2.5rs

Along with the HDD advantages...there is one big negative

If HDD crashes, all data is gone in a flash :bleh:
plus virus attack etc...

I prefer to store my HD movies on Portable HDD , easy to store and play on WDTV HD media player.

If u want to store on DVD , using MKVToolnix to split the file in 2 and then burning each file on UDF format DVD should do the job easily. For rejoining the same tool would work and its very fast as I have seen cutting a huge file takes less than 5 min and same for joining.

Hope this helps you.

Nobody who's ever lost data from a crashed hard-disk would present that argument.

@OP - You can use rar or a file splitter like HJSplit.

i know a lot of people use HDDs to backup. even i would prefer that. but no money! :(

if rar doesnt affect anything, ill just use rar. i think itll be much easier than rest.

yes i was going to do that only, but was in doubt if video quality is affected.

dunno how accurate the info is, but long back i had read somewhere that zip/rar compression of a video file affects the quality.
