Hi guys, i've a sony laptop which is some 4 years old, the recovery disks which came with it has windows xp os (without any service pack)so whenever i restore , i've to install service pack and also the new version softwares which is a tedious job, is there any software to create recovery disk after installing service pack and latest version of softwares? Also there's another problem, the burner of the laptop is not working, so i've to create the iso first and transfer to my Other pc and then burn, so the software should be able to burn an image to harddisk, not direct to Dvd . .

Why don't you create a personal CD with SP3 slip streamed into it. Or rather you can create a ghost CD with must software into it, that way you won't have to sit 3-4 Hrs configuring new system

size doesnt matter up to 4.5 gb, but how to make tht a recovery disk?

While creating backup of ur local disk(C:\), a page will come where there will be 'default options' and 'advanced options' ensure that u choose advanced options and go to the page to split the backup file for accomodating on multiple DVDs.

On proceeding ahead when the backup file is ready it will create two backup files i.e single backup file split into two. Write these backup files into two DVD's.

Now activate Acronis Startup Manager from the left pane. So, before u boot into Windows next time, if u press F11, u will boot into Acronis Manager and u can restore entire image from the DVDs even when ur windows won't boot.
Dat's it.

Try it out. If not able to do, i'll post some screenies or a guide to do the same. :)

OR:

Burn ur image to disk/keep on pen drive/external harddrive.

Acronis also gives you the option to make a normal USB pen drive bootable :ohyeah: Hardly takes up any space and ur set :)

What I do is: Keep 1 pen drive as acronis bootable and keep my images on an external USB drive. If its small enough you can keep it on USB drive too.

Tip:

1. While creating a backup of OS parition: Choose option to exclude specific fields and EXCLUDE hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys. These will simply be created again by the OS once you boot from the recovered image. + saves space and image is smaller.

2. Choose advanced options and choose compression = high instead of normal. Again some more space saving.

If you can hold off for another day, I am posting a guide that will go over Partition Strategies and backing up Partition Images using all open source tools.
