Recently my Bad Company 2 has been freezing up on me after about 30 mins of online play. Alt+Ctrl+Del does not work, only way is to hard reset the system. Google gave a lot of suggestions, and I am listing the ones that I tried but did not work :

1. Rolled back from Catalyst 11.6 to 11.4
2. Rolled back to 10.6
3. Checked memory, testes with individual RAM modules
4. Disabled High Definition Audio from Audio, Video and Controllers in Device Manager
5. Installing the latest Realtek audio driver

The only thing that did work was disabling the onboard audio, did not crash after 2 hours testing. A lot of people seem to have had this problem and they say that the onboard sound is the culprit. However I have been playing this since it came out with onboard audio, and this started happening only since the last month. I do not want to buy a sound card just for one game. Anyone else has/had this problem and found a fix which is different from the ones listed above?

When it freezes, does the sound stutter continuously? Just curious.

I don't like on-board audio as I find the quality below par for gaming though its fine for other day to day use. You don't need to buy an expensive sound card. You can get a decent one for gaming for under 2k.

Try this workaround for WinXP. For Win 7 you will have to find your way around accordingly.

1) If you have ANYTHING OC'd (CPU/GPU etc.), reset it to default. Since you have a good PSU I doubt this could be a power related issue.

2) Try using the Realtek HD drivers provided by your mobo manufacturer (even if they are old) rather than the latest ones from the Realtek site.

3) Open Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices. Here select the "Audio" tab.

4) Under "Sound Playback" select "Advanced" and then "Performance"

5) Under "Audio Playback" move the "Hardware Acceleration" slider from "Full" to "None". You can do the same for "Sample Rate Conversion Quality" as well.

6) Save settings and reboot if required

See if that helps. My sincere advice would be BUY A SOUND CARD. Trust me, the difference in quality is very significant and well worth it. Once you do, you will wonder how you put up with on board audio to begin with.

One of the reasons I still prefer XP for gaming -IS- my sound card (Creative SB LIVE). Unfortunately there are no drivers for the card for Win7. While using Win 7 (separate hdd) I am forced to use the Realtek HD on board sound and sorely miss my brilliant SB LIVE with full EAX support. Needless to say I do -ALL- my gaming in XP. Games installed on Win 7 hdd - ZERO.

Shortlisted 2 sound cards specifically for Win 7 as I know I will have to switch at some point and abandon my beloved SB Live..... :(

Yes, the freeze is accompanied by sound looping. There's no way to change hardware acceleration in Win 7. No over or underclocks. I will try to borrow a soundcard and see if that really helps. Pity, I was planning to get a Deathadder and mow this extra expense came up.

Btw Ricky, let me know which sound card are you getting for Win 7.

Got a new Sound Blaster 5.1 VX. So far no crashes, played quite a while today. And yes, it does make a difference, the thump is noticeably deeper and the audio positioning far better. Everything has more depth. Hopefully this will serve me well when BF3 comes out.

Sorry about the late reply. The cards I am considering are the Sound Blaster Audigy Value 7.1. (Rs.1700 on EBay), the Asus Xonar DX 7.1($50 on newegg) & the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme ($41 on newegg)

Trust me, the quality of the positional audio alone will save you from a LOT of potential back-stabs in BF3! ;)

Once you experience the superior quality of a decent sound card, its hard to get by with on-board sound....

Yes, I was tempted to get the Audigy, but am really broke now :(

^^

Did you mean a USB soundcard or one which supports USB headphones? Don't about the latter, but this looks like a good one for a USB soundcard
