My Rig is
AMD Phenom, x2 550 BE 3.1 ghz, MSI HD 4850 , 2gb RAM , WIN XP SP 3
Huntek y PSU 550 w

i installed GTA 4 ... expecting good smooth frame rates at medium settings ..
but it wasnt so .. while driving around i get a frame rate of 15 - 30 .. in Water it becomes very framy .. and also in explosions...

even if i lower the settings down to low ... the lag is still der but lesser...

i ran benchmarks .. with medium-highest settings at 20 view distance and it gave me 35 FPS average...
another benchmark with all LOW settings at 1 view distance gave me 36 FPS..

changing texture quality or any other setting except view distance...does not change the fps ...

in the benchmark it is playable, minimum frame rate is 25 .. but while actually playing its very bad....

from benchmarks i should be gettin 30+ fps at medium....
and i dont think my CPU is a bottleneck ..
i CAN run DIRT 2 Demo at Ultra settings convincingly.. :):)

plz help me out :)

The benchmark gives more FPS than you actually get.

GTA IV needs a quad with a 4850x2/5850 or higher recommended

GTA IV does not realize the GPU. It runs off the CPU. Up, the cycles on the CPU.

you need a quad core, 4GB RAM & Windows 7 x64

game is too dependent on the processor & RAM

+1

Needs 64-bit OS + 4GB RAM + Quad core to run smoothly. With the above a 4850 should give acceptable performance at medium/high settings. Read the following

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/262069-28-graphics-card
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2008/12/15/grand_theft_auto_iv_gameplay_performance_iq/1

The hardOCP article is an old one and may be using an older version of the game. Just check what version they are using.

The game is optimised for 64-bit and quad core processors. The box in which the game is shipped says that.

In game benchmark is not indicative of actual game play performance.

Try 64-bit OS and also make sure u install the latest patch (1.0.0.4).

I meant either a 5850 or a 4850 X2. And even then you may not be able to play Maxed out but definitely nearly maxed out with decent performance.

^powerful gpu is not so important. It mainly needs 1GB video ram so that you can max out settings and a powerful quad cpu + 4GB ram to deliver the framerates.

As already mentioned there is a need for a good proccy and RAMs too. Nevertheless try and use the latest 1.0.4.0 patch. It did ring in a few noticeable performance improvement when i was hooked onto the game.

But people having similar configurations as mine can get atleast playable FPS. . . .

MY processor is 550 BE @ 3.1 ghz.. eventhough its double core .. the 3.1 ghz .. isnt good enough??? ...

i just normally started GTA 4 ... and this... ~~!!

Its just a really bad console port you can try lowering the settings and it will still hardly make a difference. That is why I passed on this game.

I switched to Windows7 x64. I had a Core 2 duo,4870 and 4gb Ram. Some of the options, previously disabled (some ingame memory options) were enabled post the switch over and overall gameplay was much much smoother.

4 GB RAM is essential in gettin stable FPS ?? is it?

Yes it may be, more the RAM more the performance as i also have 4GB and while playing GTA 4 it goes to 3.2GB usages;) and a many other members said use x64 OS, you can try that also and may this link help you GTA-IV PC Tweaks/Fixes .
