Linux Basic Question regarding installation

I m running windows 7 on my netbook(1gb ram ,atom processor,160 gb hard disk).
I have created 4 partition .
How would i install ubuntu operating system (I want to make dual boot)?
Will it erase the data on existing partitions?
What is the minimum space requirement for it?
Is the partition created with ubuntu os be accessible using windows 7 (as i heard ubuntu doent support fat/fat32/ntfs).
Which partition should i choose (ext3/ext4/Any other).
Will it impact the performance(Considering netbook speed)?
Which is Most stable version of ubuntu?
Where would i find the ubuntu cd to download?
Are there sufficient software available for jobs like photoshop, video player with all format support?

ok. first of all back up externally ALL your important data because you might LOSE all of it if you make a mistake...

Make a bootable LiveUSB stick or burn a CD from the ISO you download and boot from it to start the installation

Not unless you make a mistake.

Depends on how much data you want to store, just for the OS and apps 8 gb should be enough and another partition to store your files/media etc...

I dont believe so unless you use some EXT4 filesystem driver that may be available for Win7 if you search... but Ubuntu can access NTFS/Win7 partitions no problems...

Go with the EXT4 default...

Nope, in fact should be as good as if not faster than Win7 !

Which is Most stable version of ubuntu?

Get current 9.10 or if you wait 1 month get the upcoming 10.04 release...

Lots! Check the other threads in this section... ! Like the sticky thread above for linux applications... see http://www.techenclave.com/open-source-and-linux/need-program-do-xxx-task-gnu-157304.html

Good to see you are trying out Linux, I wonder why you chose Ubuntu over other ones like Fedora etc? But stick with Ubuntu :D We can help you set it up nicely to do graphics and multimedia smoothly...

For making LiveUSB sticks check out sites like:

Mistake meaning IF you format your existing Windows partition while installing Ubuntu (as an example)...

I thought you already made partitions? If not just try burning a CD or LiveUSB and running WUBI in Windows.... WUBI is Windows Ubuntu Based Installer or something like that - it allows you to install Ubuntu as if it was an application inside windows :)

Yes you can access files created in Win7 (but not vice versa?) but you can actually create files in Ubuntu and save them on the Windows NTFS disk so that you can access them both ways, see?

If you have netbook don't use default ubuntu. There a good ubuntu version called ubuntu netbook remix. Good for the small screens of netbook.
and if your use your netbook only for surfing chatting music and movies try out moblin linux. Its simply awesome

OT: lol, that has to be the worst quote/unquote I've ever seen :ohyeah:! Preview your posts before submitting changes :)

If you have a netbook, Ubuntu Netbook Remix is better than the normal Ubuntu. Also, it is possible to 'install Ubuntu inside windows', without any re-partitioning. It is possible to dual boot even if you install inside windows. However, I had a problem with 'install inside windows'. I was not able to access the drive Ubuntu was installed in.
