I have a laptop bought today and have a hathway internet connection at my home connected with my pc

now when i removed the lan wire from my pc and connected it to my laptop it showed unidentified network,i left that thing and again connected lan wire with my cpu, but it showed limited connectivity - i had to call CC to solve this, though the problem got solved within seconds

The thing is that guy told me that whenever i need to connect my laptop i need to call CC to do so and same for my pc

he suggested me to buy a ROUTER

Frankly, i never understood the differece between a router and a modem

can somebody explain me in detail and in extreme basic language so that i can understand

Basically- A modem is a device which converts the data coming from the phone line into a language the computer understands while the router is simply used to distribute the data

coming from the modem to several devices/PC's at one time ...it's the base of wifi usage

nowadays wifi modems are in use ...eliminating the use of routers ;)...however high-end routers are way capable then wifi modems but basic home users prefer wifi modems only :)

I think hathway has bind your PC MAC address into their system. So whenever you connect any other device you wont be able to access internet on it. You can spoof or change your MAC Address of laptop. So you don't have to call them every time you switch.
And Some Router does allow MAC cloning which helps in you scenario.

^ Yes, its definitely the MAC address...

Use 1 same MAC id on both of em...
how can i know the mac id of my pc and how can i change that in my laptop ?

I think u can ask the isp provider to unlock ur mac address... Had a similar problem with my isp and called them and informed them to unlock the mac address now i can connect any comp/laptop to the net w/o mac issues....

If u want to find mac address for ur comp run cmd and type getmac... U will get ur mac address as a group of 6 2-digit codes jus tbelow the physical address...

If u want to change mac address there are some freewares available online... but i cannot recommend u any as have not used them personally...

if u are buying a router then buy something like Netgear wgr614 ..connect ur PC with the router via LAN and ur laptop via wifi

(u'll easily understand how to do this by reading the router's manual.....it's quite brief ;) )

by doing this u'll be able to use the internet both on desktop and laptop at the same time :)

u'll have to change the router settings after buying it...u can post ur queries regarding that ;)

My suggestion would be to get a basic router. You'll definitely find some decent options if you look around in market or online, as they are available for as low as 1k..
