Hey Guys,

My friend has an Inspiron 1505. Two months back the battery was no longer getting charged. We didnt replace it as DELL guys were trying to force us with the 9-cell battery.

As days passed on, some of the keys of lappy stopped working. So we ordered and replaced the keypad of the laptop.

After a month, the laptop won't boot displaying " UNKNOWN_BOOT_VOLUME" errors. The SMART self test reports SATA HDD read errors. Repairing XP didnt help. UBUNTU Live CD boots well. We didnt try to install XP or ubuntu.

Is there any chance that Dead Battery in the laptop leads to Overheating and cause other hardware failures.

And we asked for a quotation from DELL for 1GB 533MHz RAM and 6-cell battery. They quoted 4.3K for RAM and 4.8K for a 9-cell battery. I could see that the RAM is away too much overpriced. Is there any reason for the high cost ?? Can we buy a RAM locally and ask DELL guys to replace it ??

1. NO, a dead battery wont cause any other issues. :) Ideally, you can just disconnec tht ebattery and keep it aside if you want.

2. Buying DELL RAM is a big no-no unless ur Bill Gates :P Buy form the market. Any computer guy will install it for you without any issues. Even you can do it, just google for it. You just need to open a small cover at the bottom and install it :)

and if you do not want to take risk of opening your laptop take it to any computer dealer or repair person he will do it for you for a very small charge...

may be 50 rs or so...

Then is there any reason why the hardware is failing one after the other ?? within short span... The laptop is hardly 2 years old.

What about renewing the warranty from dell for another 3 years ? will it be useful ?

What abt replacement of the HDD ?? if i buy locally ??

HDD RAM and battery can all be replaced locally..
And verry easily..
Hdd and ram u can change your self..

Go to the dell website, go to support, then select ur model, then manuals, then service manual, then see the memory(ram) and hdd part..
Its as simple as opening a few screws..
:)
