In this post, we will be rounding up the latest news about the upcoming Blackberry 10 device, which apparently will carry the name tag BB Z10. This post will give you the full rumored internal configuration for the upcoming (and last ray of hope) flagship smartphone by (barely afloat) Canadian company RIM (Research In Motion). In addition, we have leaked images of the upcoming N-Series BB10 device which packs a QWERTY keypad. Also covered is RIM's initiative to have 70,000 Apps in the Blackberry World App Store (for BB10) by urging developers (and giving incentive too) to port their Android apps over in a 36 hour porting jam.
Blackberry Z10

The Blackberry Z10 is RIM's upcoming flagship and launch pad for their new OS, the Blackberry OS 10. This is the OS (and device) that the company is banking on to retake the market share it lost and once again make a name for itself (from whatever little is left). And therefore, RIM has gone all out with their upcoming flagship phone. This can be seen from the leaked specifications from the guys over at BBN.in and Crackberry and N4BB. Here it is:

  • Processor: Dual Core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4470; Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 (US and Canada)
  • Radio: Quad Band HSPA+ / UMTS (850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz); Quad Band GSM / GPRS (850/900/1800MHz); Quad Band LTE Bands 2,4,5,13,17 (700, 850,1700, 1900MHz)
  • Display: 4.2-inch; 1280x768; 356PPI; 24 Bit Color; 15:9 ratio
  • Camera: 8MP Auto Focus; 2MP Front Facing; Flash; 1080p Video Recording
  • Memory: 2GB RAM; 16GB Internal Storage; Hot Swappable microSD Slot
  • WiFi: 802.11 a/b/g/n; 2.4 & 5GHz
  • GPS: Autonomous; A-GPS
  • Battery: 1800mAh Removable
  • Sensors: Ambient Light Detector; Accelerometer; Magnetometer; Gyroscope; Face Detect for phone calls
  • Connectivity: NFC; microUSB; microHDMI-Out; Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low energy)

The phone will pack different chipsets for different regions. It is worth noting that the TI OMAP chip for the US is far weaker in raw performance than the Snapdragon S4 for Canada. Preferential home treatment? Personally, I don't really think that RIM is in a position to do that. The device will pack 2 GB of RAM, which is quite a lot. We do wish RIM had stepped it up with a quad core CPU. Oh well, perhaps a future model.

Even on the imaging front, you have a 8 MP rear snapper capable of 1080p video recording and a large 2 MP front sensor. 16 GB of internal storage can nicely be complimented with expandable storage (thank the gods for this feature). NFC is also available, and LTE too (to appeal to the US citizens). The display is a nice 4.2" 24-bit color capacitive packing (1280*728) pixels. This gives it the same aspect ratio of 15:9 as Google's Nexus 4 smartphone. Battery size is a little on the lower side, at just 1800 mAh battery. Well if the battery is nicely optimized for more than a day's usage, then we have nothing to complain about. It is worth noting that the battery is removable, so people who need extended backup can carry a spare.

The Blackberry Z10 will be released on January 30th, 2013.
Leaked N-Series device images

RIM is planning to launch the N-Series BB10 running smartphones with a QWERTY keypad for you addicts and lovers of that amazing Blackberry smartphone keypad. The new device may be called the X10 and will pack a square display of resolution (720*720), an odd one we must note.

The device does look quite different from the current crop of BB smartphones. Let's hope they are equally better as well.

RIM's Android Apps Port-A-Thon for BB 10

RIM is trying real hard to meet it's target of 70,000 apps for the BB10 platform. To achieve that, it is encouraging developers to take part in a Port-A-Thon to port their Android apps over. The incentive here is that there's more than $500,000 to be won. A developer can earn $100 per app and for 20 apps, that's $2000 right there. Devs who submit at least 5 apps get a chance to win one of the 100 Blackberry 10 Dev Alpha devices that RIM will be giving out.

So what are you waiting for developer? Head on to the following pages now!
