Guy's need suggestions for a 120GB+ SSD (SATA 3) for under $200 to be imported from US. Crucial M4 seems to be a popular choice. What else?

Performance is important, but reliability is of even higher importance

If reliability is of higher importance, stick to the M4. Its old, but the firmware is mature.

The 520 is much newer and Intel's first attempt at a SandForce drive. I'd be a little cautious given their recent screw-up with the 320 firmware. Looks like there's already a bug out : http://hyrule.folays.net/ssd_intel_520/

So should I change to Crucial M4? Is it good to avoid Sandforce for now? I have already told my sis to pickup the Intel 520 series 120GB at the Microcenter near her place. She will be going there tomorrow morning. So need to confirm which one to pick before evening. The only problem I see with M4 is the lousy write speeds.

Sandforce is to be avoided in general, except for the 520 drives. Those are better off simply because of the better testing/validation procedures that Intel have.

But then, at the same time, like eddy said, they have just been launched.

Any updates yet? There used to be a lot of hoopla about Intel offering International Warranty on SSDs. Not sure if this is true. No clue about Crucial on this front.

Samsung 830

Is this available locally with warranty?

Decided to take my chances with Intel 520 series. My sis will be picking it up from Microcenter (physical store) whenever she gets the call to pick up the iPad2 that she booked.

Sandforce drives are best avoided - including intel. If reliability is a key requirement, its best to get either Crucial M4 or Intel 510 or Samsung.

Seems there's a new Plextor drive based on marvell chipset that has killer performance in both read and write. This is seemingly the drive to buy right now.

Not necessarily

Anand said the 830 is still the drive to buy. But he was very positive about the M3.

Errrm I suppose the OP's sister must have already asked got the drive by now.

No harm in continuing the discussion though.

Actually sister hasn't got the SSD yet as she was in a hurry when she went to pickup the iPad.

She will be getting the SSD later, so yeah still open to alternative suggestions

Vertex 4 is again based on marvell and is a good choice.

Looks like OCZ is slowly ditching sandforce after the gazillion problems they had.
