Storage Solutions Best method to store extra unused hdd's

6pack

Luminary
Currently have about 2 of these and I had kept one of those in an antistatic bag wrapped in bubble wrap. But it seems after long time of storage (around 2 years) when I tried using it, i think it has gone bad. Keeps making weird noises. Fortunately it was an unused disk.

So it seems antistatic bag + something airtight should do the trick. Should i get those plastic food containers and store the hdd in those?

Can you let me know how you people store extra unused hdd's which have data on them?

Edit: DO we get something like these here but for lot less price? http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/307110486-FREE-SHIPPING-3-5inch-hard-disk-drive-box-store-tank-box-of-hdd-ide-sata-15PCS-wholesalers.html

Read on some forum that tupperware type of plastic can cause static and is bad for hdd.

well,i just store them in the anti-static bag.then, put them in an old mobo box.used black sponge(i found them in mobo boxes),to keep the drives from moving about, and to avoid damage.

i wonder why people will store hdd for as long as for yr or more.:S

its better to sell it off for the time and then get similar or good one as 2nd deal from TE. :P

or best use them as your usb external disks as regular bkup devices.

or best, atleast give it to some of your needy friends for usage

myself given a 40gb ide and 160sata2 to one of my friend coz he needed it at that time and is still using. But i do ask him to give back when i need to shift/arrange or dump existing data.;)

@ronit, selling off hdd is too troublesome and not to mention the time required to take backup of old 1Tb hdd to new hdd is a lot. With more and more new hdd's failing, it would be foolish to keep on changing from a good hdd to a new one which might die within a year or two.

@ashvarybabul, do you store hdd's/ usb stick's in that box or just printed pics? And are those boxes big enough to hold 2-3 hdds?

@6pack, i mean if you dont use the hdd anyway you can sell it off for the long time. and when you need one, you can easily get a used one & can even get a better GBs in less money in this way.

But my personal opinion: electronic items (not all) if left unused for looong durations get problematic or even useless & tend to loose their lives. Like batteries, speakers, disks, mobos, rams, dvd players,cd/dvds, etc.

So either give them for use to somebody or just keep them in RARE use atleast.
