Title says it all, looking for something with the highest video quality, supporting transfers over a IEEE 1394 connection, not much video editing, but conversion to MPEG-2 with least losses is what is needed.

Thanks in advance, cheers! :D

Heh sony has advanced softwares too (video creating/editing though).. Stuff like Vegas, DVD architect.. Of course there's Apple's Final Cut too :P

I think Nero might just work for you as well..All you need right now is a software which can capture your videos from the DV to your comp and you can use another software for editing and stuff..

Ps : videos of the midnight adventure? :bleh: :lol:

Well thing is that USB capture is too frickin slow and even Nero Vision 4 doesn't seem to support firewire transfer :(

Can anybody help me on how to get the cam detected via FireWire??

Jesus Christ, fookin NO! :ashamed:

Well try out Premiere then. Its easy enuff for basic capturing and encoding to mpeg-2, and it can get as advanced as you would want it to :D

Among the easy ones are Cyberlink Powerdirector and Ulead Videostudio. The latest ver are compatible with vista. Specially the powerdirector gives great quality. Infact it even has a lot of editing capabilities ...probably you won't need them all. Powerdirector helps to convert to MPEG2. You can also make HD with minimal losses.
Adobe premiere is also very good but you may find it hard if you are new to editing.
Sony softwares suck.
In each of the softwares after opening select capture source - your cam should be listed there after connecting it with the comp. Select it and begin capturing in real time.
Never use USB2 ... it results in skipped frames. I always use firewire which gives good performance throughout.
Happy editing!

I think Pinnacle Studio suits yur needs. The capture process n the conversion process are really simple and the output is really good. Have been using it since i bought my cam, the present version is version 11. Tried Adobe Premiere but it's too advanced, i wud leave it to the enthusiats.

something with the highest video quality

Video Quality is nothing to do with the software. If your Firewire card is not dropping frames, Then its all depend on the CODEC you used to capture. I use AVID 1:1 CODEC to capture my tapes. You can use Panasonic DV Codec safely. As with my exp AVID DV > BlackMagic DV > Panasonic DV > Matrox DV > Canopus DV > Sony DV> Microsoft DV> MainConcept DV

You can try this for capture: Homepage of CaptureFlux

To Encode to MPEG2, I prefer to use Mainconcept Reference: MainConcept: Information

Both are Free...

i think us should try ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO 11.:) .its not freeware..but its really good and does the job well i had the version 10..and used to capture from my sony dv tapes via firewire ie : IEEE1394

Its not a freeware.:P (but u know where to get it ? rite ?);)

use windv (a 92kb binary, but don't let that fool you) to dump raw avi files to your hdd

then use virtualdub for conversion

this combo will give you the maximum control over how and what form you want your videos in

i would suggest a ulead video studio coz its good and is simple to use where is adobe premeire or sony vegas is very hard ,thumbs up to video studio

you're looking for 2 separate things actually.. (though in many cases one program does both). minidv tapes record footage using the DV codec for compression so when you transfer digitally over firewire, it comes through as a replica. think of it as copying a video file from one hard disk to another.

the second step is encoding to mpeg2. there should be many encoders available. unfortunately, i haven't done much mpeg2 encoding on windows, only on macs. the little bit i've done on windows was using nero to burn straight to dvd. i didn't care about filesize then cuz i was burning a 10 min video to DVD-5. obviously it looked really good because it could use high bitrates without worrying about having to fit the file.
