Best player for watching mkv's

MPC with ffdshow.

For capturing snaps, I have Fraps loading at Windows startup and just use its' screenshot feature as my universal screenshot key for games and movies.

I normally use MPC but these days have started using Neuview man it looks good especially when you get the right settings for Contrast and Saturation. Also it redefines sharpness with its sharpness slider.

do any of the free players/codecs use the nvidia "purevideo" (?) HD video CPU offload thingy, so that HD video playback processing is done on the GPU rather than the CPU? im guessing not all codecs/file formats are supported, if any at all

just installed and tried kmp, pretty impressed. it managed to playback 1080p trailers of the dark knight (mkv) and blender's peach (big buck bunny) (ogg) with some skipping on my old P4 2.4 ghz. vlc and mplayer used to choke on these and only barely manage to play some 720p files... didnt bother to check what codecs these files contain...

MPC dxva builds have a h264 video decoder which is supposed to use nvidia purevideo HD but atleast on my 9600 GT it does not work well so I am using cyberlink H264 decoder with KMPlayer

yes, i remember an earlier post (maybe elsewhere) about smooth 1080p playback which mentioned pointing kmplayer to an external codec which would use purevideo...

Do you notice any diff. in video quality?? I doubt it but would still like your opinion. Also apart from VLC player and zoom player pro does any other player have the ability to crop video to 16:10 instead of 16:9 ??

MPC with the comm codec pack... one of the simplest players.. ofcourse plying a full 1080P clip of DiaHard 4 had both the cores on me C2D e6600 @ 2.88 ghz at 92% throughout... now thats something... i donno how to enable hardware decoding of these mkv clips on the 8800GT card... heard bout the purevideo decoder for nvcards but the damm thing costs money :( .... noticed some weird things... donno if any else faced these..

VLC for 1080P clips.. complete crappiness.. get very choppy playback..both cores at 100%

while using windows media player 11 .. both cores used at the most 30% max.. now thats something weird... btw will try other players as well.. lets see which ones the best..

also while playing the same clip in MPC while windowd.. the cpu usage was around 92 to 98% most of the time.. but when i went full screen.. usage dropped dramatically to around 30% - 45% just as with the WMP11... hmm strange.. can anyone explain this??

sorry for the OT post folks :p

Edit :-

DOH!! figured out the problem myself..well when i played the 1080P clip windowd in MPC it displayed the whole of 1920x800 resolution which went right across my monior as i couldent see the whole thing... but on fullscreen it reduced it to 1680x720 res ...maybe thats why the dramatic reduction in cpu usage :p
