best video player for playing movies etc?

The Combined Community Codec Pack.
I know it's a codec pack and not a player, but it's the cleanest one and also configures MPC-HC and FFDShow for you.

If one doesn't want a codec pack, then either VLC or KMPlayer. Though I much prefer the UI of MPC-HC.
 
How about media player classic that comes with K lite codec pack. Its far better then VLC. VLC doesn`t support 3gp playback.

Try using the normalise option in MPCHC to make your movies louder.
