Best way of backing up iPhone?

Am about to update my iphone to latest firmware....but i want some way to backup my contacts,SMS and photos COMPLETELY...last time i did with itunes(one of the worst softwares for the job IMO), it just erased my contacts when i synced with my PC.and i think the multiple phone numbers of a contact was NOT recovered.

So, how do u guys go about it?
