IBM BOFFINS claimed they've fashioned a tiny low cost chipset which will receive and transmit data 10 times faster than the most advanced wi-fi nets available today.

The chipset is built using silicon germanium (SiGe) and uses an unlicensed part of the radio spectrum, said IBM.

The antennae are directly embedded into the chipset package and IBM claims a prototype chipset module including two antennae, receiver and transmitter take up the area of a coin called a dime.

Applications using the 60GHz technology are PANs (personal area networks), and IBM also suggests that the tech will allow easy wireless broadband video distribution. A 60GHz link could stream a high def video signal from a DVD player to a plasma TV, for example.

Doubtless the IBM chipset will not be branded Viiv, however.
