In the month of December I will need to send my bike from Mumbai to Pune. What service/ courier I can use to do this ?
I am aware the distance between these two cities is less than 200 km but I am not riding this time(although I have rode before). Also I have got strict instructions (you know from where) to not ride the bike from Mumbai to Pune.
So please suggest what would be the best way to send the bike ? I require the bike to reach Pune on the day I reach Pune or before (can tell someone to receive it). Bike is Honda Unicorn, if that matters.

Railways is actually the safest option as far as transit damage is concerned, but since you won't be travelling with the bike, all bets are off when it actually gets shipped. Your only option (other than getting a friend to ride it to pune) is a courier like blue dart/gati (do NOT use agarwal - personal experience). Some transit damage will be inevitable, but the time of delivery will be sort of guaranteed. If possible get the packing material from a honda showroom, and tell the courier guys to pack the bike with that. Provide extra bubble wrap yourself for indicators, tank, silencer and other important bits.

You could always point out you have an equal chance of getting mowed down by a crazy bus driver wihile standing around near swargate as you do of getting into an accident while riding down on NH4. :)

Agreed. Railways are your best and cheapest option. They will also anyways wrap the bike tank etc with their own khadi cloth etc & they do it pretty well. In fact when you take the bike to them for it to be packed prior to transport, just tip the guy an extra 100 and he'll be sure to do it well. At VT station theres a separate section where they handle these bikes etc. Speak to them prior to handing over the bike and they'll tell you how to go about it. A little bit of broken marathi even works wonders ;)

Do some of your own packing as soggy just mentioned. It will ensure additional protection. Usually they will do a good job of transporting your bike and normally theres not much damage to be expected on short journeys. Long journeys are different due to mixed load etc where they have to move the bike around in the goods section etc which can cause scratches or minor dents as every major station means new load onloaded or to be offloaded and your bike is likely to be moved around. Bombay Pune is not such a big deal.

All you gotta do is ensure you travel by the same train the same day & make sure they offload the bike at Pune. Job done. Good Luck!

I dunno about the railway but i have had experience with GATI,Had to send a bike from Mumbai to Bangalore
They charged me around 3-4K but their service was top-notch so maybe you wanna take a look at GATI as well :)

But the best option is for someone to ride it from Mumbai to Pune,it ain't far
Maybe tell a friend to do that for you ?

Gati/Aramex for transporting bike. I had got a bike shipped to Bangalore once about a couple of years ago. Was charged around 3-4k.
Once you take it there, ask them to pack it for you. They will pack the whole bike nicely with bubble paper. Make sure to give extra protection to headlamps and other delicate areas. It would be advisable to remove the mirrors if possible coz they can easily break off during transport. After all the bubble paper they use gunny bags as well on top I believe.

I have used Gati once but that was for a friend's activa sent from Pune to Dehradun, they charged 3-4K from what i remember. Apart from safety, the reason i cannot ride is because i will have some luggage with me and i cannot adjust all that while riding the bike.
Do those Neeta Volvo peopleut bike in the bottom luggage compartment and transport ? I know my cousin had done that few years back. They insist on removing all the petrol from the bike before loading it in the bus.

Actually, i was gonna suggest that but refrained from doing so as i don't know if they still do it. Two of my friends did the same (albeit Nashik -> Pune journey) around a couple of years back. One was a TVS Scooty and the other an HH Ambition. They charged around 200-300 bucks for the same. Both of 'em reached safely and yes their petrol tanks were asked to be emptied. I was there when the Scooty was being loaded onto the rear trunk of the bus (non-Volvo). They laid out a few layers of cardboard box sheets (those perforated ones) and on top that went the Scooty. You better ask someone from your place in Mumbai to inquire about this facility with the local bus operator.

Recently (about 10 days back) I transferred my bike (Yamaha R15) from Kolhapur to Pune (Around 250kms). I transferred it through local vehicle transport company (Works in Kolhapur, Pune and nearby areas). They asked me to empty petrol tank, and provide copies of bike registration card. They took 500 bucks but transferred my bike in very good condition. Look for vehicle transport services at your place. They do it in a very professional manner.

That's a waste of bike and money, and an experience too. You should have rode your Destrier with pride, it deserves better.

Heheh, Have traveled a lot before.. (Like 500-700Kms a day too :P) The thing was, bike was not in condition of riding for such a long distance (Chain and gear issues) and I had to bring it to Pune from my place so that I can have a ride there at Pune :D
