Hi, question on Blu-Ray in India as such. Has it really taken off? What sort of players are available in India? Does it even make sense to buy a player/discs at a high price when digital downloads may just be around the corner?

Appreciate responses/discussion on why/why not people have gone in for Blu-Ray :)

I'm waiting for the day I can buy the PS3.. then atleast a Blu-Ray disc every month. As for your query, I think that affordable Blu-Ray players are yet not available in India. That is the main reason..

i'm waiting till price of bluray writers falls below 4k and media comes down to around 25 bucks per piece.

well obviously because of the high price of both media and player.this was the same case in early days of DVD.
until blu ray players are priced below 10k it won't sell, the blu ray movies should be priced the same as DVDs.
even DVD player really took off in india only when pirated DVD movies were available .
i think the cheapest blu ray player excluding the PS3 is the LG BD-370 priced at MRP20k.

hmmmmm.. checked out the market today. The PS3 seriously seems to be the only viable option available. I mean, Sony has some standalone players at 20-25k, philips has some models @ 16k and 24k. The 80Gb PS3 meanwhile is 20k.

So even for someone who doesnt need a game console, the PS3 seems to be the most VFM Blu-Ray player in the market. I guess thats exactly what Sony wants as well.

Pricing is exp though. Hindi movies start @ 999 while english ones 1.3k and up. Games I saw were 1.6k and up to 2.5k for some popular titles.

What about region codes and stuff? There is a lock right? So I can only play Hindi and English stuff thats been released for the India specific region? :(

Doesnt make sense to go for blu-ray currently at all it seems. Its been hanging on so long, by the time ti drops in price, digital downloads may just make it useless :P

even studios predict that blu-rays will get mass acceptance like current dvd media by 2012 that implies that adoption has been slow

I guess most of the Hollywood releases are multi region, dunno about the hindi ones though.

Here's a nice site with a comprehensive list of Blue Ray titles and their region codes ... Blu-Ray Region Code Info

Like everyone said, PS3 is the best blueray option atm.
