They did.... but blurays came out too late and too expensive... and they were too damned stubborn about it.

Well its not that bad I guess... the bluray drive is a constant 9MB/s across the entire media. Compared to that the 12X DVD drive that ships with xbox360 varies between 6X on the inner edge to 12X on the outer edge, with an average speed that translates to around 8-9X.

I would say it is slightly slower than the DVD on x360. The problem with that is the slow speed on a bluray kills more than on a DVD. Since more data needs to be read, in pretty much the same timeframe, you definitely need higher speeds (if not the same) on the bluray.
