A friend of mine bought a c2d rig, the config are e6300, gigabyte GA-945-MRZ with a Seagate 250GB PATA and LG H20N, the features only one IDE port.

The Problem is that when he starts the comp, he gets the "boot disk failure" error, but when he keeps the Windows Xp CD in the drive its login into windows properly:huh: . He had kept the HDD as the primary master and DVD writer as the Primary slave.

Now, after changing the HDD to Primary Slave and DVD Writer the Primary Master, he is getting the problem once in 3 times.

Can tell me whats wrong, so that i can help him out :)

Thanks

Has he tried disconnecting the DVD entirely, and connecting only the HDD? I suspect some strange IDE conflicts. I earlier suspected a corrupt MBR, but then the one in three times thing wouldn't hold.

^^ Sry i forgot to tell that, its working perfectly when the optical drive is d/c entirely.

The 945 Chipset only supports one IDE Device.

Though, He can use 1 Cable to connect both the HDD and the DVD-Drive. Though, Performance hit will be huge. HDD Read speeds will fall to 12mbps, from like 50mbps.

Id recommend, he should get a SATA HDD, or atleast a IDE-SATA Converter, If its available in India :S.

So I was on the right track. Well, your friend never should have bought a PATA hdd of that size anyway, and I doubt the dealer will take it back... good luck to him.

The HDD was 3 months old, he didn't buy it now along with this rig.

Is this a problem with all the new motherboards?? What about the 965 Based boards?

you dont mix optical drives and HDD's on the same channel... both drives will suffer severe performance hits., ESPECIALLY a DVD writer

I wonder if PCI IDE controllers are available in india. I suppose you could use them for the writer

See this thread...

PATA HDD is a definite no-no with 965 boards. Lot of unpredictability and problems as ICH8 does not support IDE and a seperate JMicron controller has to be used.

As for your friends problem, see whether halt on all errors is selected in BIOS. Also try changing boot order to HDD first. Also I would recommend that your friend buy a SATA HDD if he can afford it and use the other hdd as an external drive using USB. PATA to SATA converters also seem to be having a lot of problems.

Thanks for answering my queries guyz:)

My friend has decided to sell the PATA drive, and i have made a thread for the same in Market section.

Thread can be closed.
