I'm in the US at the moment and will be returning via Hong Kong, wanted to bring back a nice bottle of Scotch. Where should I buy to get a good price?

I'm in Oregon state til this week end, then will be in California til Friday. Will be stopping over at Hong Kong airport, finally arriving Mumbai.

So wondering if I should buy it while in the US (Oregon or California?) or while in the Hong Kong duty free or wait till reaching Mumbai duty free?

I feel Mumbai duty free is the best option. Rates are cheaper is what I've heard and convenient too since you aren't lugging the bottles around, although some of the stuff you wont get here (eg. Jagermeister).

Jagermeister FTW! BTW you can get two bottles, get one of these and probably a Glenfidditch. Glenmorangie is a nice choice as well, if cheap ones then Jameson...although this is Irish.

Other common options are Chivas Regal and Black Label

Cost should be similar across, I'm guessing HK is a bit cheaper. Liquor is always costlier in India than elsewhere.

Yeah I guess choice will be limited at the airport duty free, regardless of price. I'm thinking of visiting a proper wine store with decent options in Palo Alto itself next week, doesn't matter if it costs a bit more.

Is Jagermeister a scotch??? I'm looking probably Ballantine's and/or Glenlivet/Glenfiddich, unless some other smooth scotch (12-15 yr) comes up. Yep, will carry 2 bottles I guess :D

Jagermeister isnt a scotch, but its a whiskey :P I've finished 3 bottles in 4 months and love every drop of it :P

Avoid Ballantines. last time I had, it gave me a bad stomach ache :(

Can it be called a whiskey? I don't think so.

Stomach is going to ache if you finish 3 in 4 months ;P

Jager isn't a whisky...and it's only good for mixing with stuff like Red Bull (which IMO is stupid since it kills the taste)

Go for some single malts.

Ballantines is cheap at 19$ iirc. Had already picked up JD and Chivas so couldnt. Thing is I always prefer to buy booze at destination, because I dont want to worried sick about breakage. Keep that in mind.

It is technically a whiskey :P Ballantines gave me the stomach ache, not Jager. The other day finished some 400ml in a single sitting :P

If you don't want to get the usual recommendations like JD and Chivas, you can try some single mats.

Few I have seen in airports.
Macallan, Highland park, glenmorangie. Usually the single malts will be in a separate shelf.

Get it from Mumbai duty free.

1. Indian duty free is actually quite reasonable.
2. Unless you want some fancy french wine/brandy etc, Indian duty free usually has a decent collection of scotch, both single malt and otherwise. + no breakage worries etc.
