3.What are the advantages of adding custom firware to this router?

4.If custom firmware, which one is the best suited for my purpose and my model

firmware version != Hardware version.

Chances are , you got a version 7.0 (that's all you get here in india) and it runs on vxworks, not linux

Its not a brand new product, its used one, my ebay seller told me its version 2.0 , i know version 7.0 can't be modedd , thats why i insisted for version 2.0, he has shipped the item.. Will have to check when it reaches me, BTB how to check the firmware version.?

My WRT54G has been acting weird lately, wifi goes down, i have to restart it to get it work again. I think time to CFW it.

DD WRT is the best, most popular and supported by open forums.

You have the option of various versions/ flavours/ features if you are capable of experimenting.

The standard mini/ micro builds are also good enough, and for your purpose should suffice.

If you really want maximum range, get a better router with more output power/ get a higher quality antenna for what you have bought, i.e. 7dB or higher.

ok let me first check out the performance of this, then if needed i will add an antenna... should i have to change the router or i can add the antenna in this itself?

If you're dead sure it's a v2 unit, Tomato firmware is another great option. To verify the hardware version of the unit, flip it upside down. You'll find a Linksys logo there. Below that is the model number with the hardware version.
