Hi all,

After a lot of brain racking on my other thread , I got a 17" LG monitor, but then again changed it for a brand new Samsung 940BW. Arrives Christmas day (morning), so really could not find the time to unpack and take a look at it. Finally at the end of the day, when I unpack it (after installing my new XFX GeForce 6200 AGP card) - power up the monitor, connect it to DVI, this is what happens.

1. Unpack monitor, fix stand, take a few pictures, monitor looks impressive for sure.

2. Once I power it up, the monitor keeps showing the analog/Digital modes - like it is searching for the signal - I kind a felt like the monitor was not getting the DVI signal - or was getting ?confused.

2. Finally, after 30 seconds or so, it works fine with DVI. Boot into XP. Install drivers. Set resolution at 1440 x 900, refresh rate at 60 and then hit apply. Just as I hit apply, the screen totally blanks out - I guess maybe it is adjusting - but nothing after that. Even the LED does not light up now - monitor gone kaput! Can this happen due to the settings/instructions from the software to the monitor? I mean I have never seen or heard this before. Or is it just a lemon? I am sending the monitor back as soon as the shops open - have not paid for it yet :)

haha...no offence...but may be you have be given a LCD which must gone thru test labs... :P

Anyways, get it changed asap.

Yes, I couldn't agree with you more. The plot thickens. Now I think what looks like scratch marks on the screws at the back of the panel - a repaired piece with a ?pre-existing defect?

what kinda screws are those...looked like UFOs to me in that high-res pic from imageshack. But seem like some1 has tampered with the screws.

I've had a problem with 740N where I couldnt set the resolution to 1024x768 or higher... just 800x600. Then a guy came in and replaced some part. In 15min, it was running at all res...

mmm...very interesting - let us see where this goes.

I dont know much about lcd monitors but i think you are not supposed to change the refresh rate, its kinda fixed.

You're right Magnet, I am asking for a brand new LCD. No repair works for me.

Hacker, you are partly right I think - you can change the refresh rate - at least I did see the refresh options in the 940bw, but I can't change it on my Compaq notebook's LCD.

Can you at least see the BIOS screen when you restart the PC?

In case you can, you might want to try this. When you start your computer, as soon as the bios screen completes, hold down the F8 key. This will bring up the Win XP boot menu. Select "Enable VGA Mode".

I'm thinking whether it may be a driver problem or a problem with the particular resolution you selected. You might be able to reset it in this mode by re-installing the driver or changing the display resolution.

Thanks sydras,

Unfortunately I couldn't see anything, not even the power LED (power button) would come on. It just went blank and never recovered. Monitor is sent for replacement - it is not a very common product (at least where I live), so I will have to wait.

Hi folks,

I got my replacement monitor today after a really long wait. The new one is working fine now (touchwood) :) I like the monitor, crisp, not too harsh. There was something about the LG one I got earlier which was way too harsh (even with all the fine tuning) - this one works excellent out of the box.

Thanks for all your comments.
