Hi Kolkatans,

I have just moved to kolkata and I'm looking for a broadband connection here. I will be looking to download stuff. Not so much of youtube etc. What are the good service providers here?

I'm living in the Park Circus area, Darga Road to be precise.

Thanks:)

Welcome to kol , especially in my neighbourhood... Here the only "good" isp is alliance, call up your cable tv provider, they will arrange it for you

Thanks for the prompt reply Deep16!

If I go through the cablewala, will i have to take the cable tv connection also? I already have Tata Sky.

What plans does Alliance offer?

- BSNL is the best as long as it works

- Alliance is available almost everywhere, plans are ok-ish and has decent reputation too

- Airtel is good but available only at select parts of the city (don't think it's available in your area but talk to customer care before taking decisions)

And no you don't need cable TV to get internet :)

Yes wishnet is best in kol, but very few cable providers actually provide them. op has the best chance of getting alliance, bsnl sucks,

How does alliance/wishnet compare with BSNL/Airtel ?

For example; how much bandwidth do you really get at peak hours ?
How is the packet loss and latency to servers outside India ?
How often are outages ?

Wishnet has better net speeds, but alliance has something called peering which helps you download latest movies games and other stuffs from public trackers at 1.5~2.2mBps . So choose accordingly. SO if you pay 550rs in wishnet you might get 70~kBps net speed and 70~kBps on torrents , while on alliance you will get 50kBps~ in the internet and 1.5mBps on torrents[peering].

Interesting; are pings better than BSNL ?

Typically US servers are 280-333ms, EU servers are 180-240ms

However during peak hours at any point on the routing BSNL becomes awful and gives 100ms+ the above and heavy packet loss.
Does this happen with alliance/wishnet ?

And are pings in a similar range ?

For online gaming and connecting to US/EU servers what matters the most to me is pings and line quality; download speed itself isn't *that* important; but of course 1mbps downstream would be great.

The main problem with alliance is their 24 Online Client, don't know whether PPPoE connection is possible over alliance.

And how can we forget, even a glich of thunderstorm and Alliance shut it off.

I used Alliance, then moved to BSNL.

Used to face too many problems...like..

1. They provide static IP, so if someone in our locality is downloading from rapidshare or other file sharing sites, I couldn't download anything as for free user simultaneous downloading is not possible. Again there is problem of per day Quota.

2. Torrents, couldn't do port forwarding and all, and never used to get better speeds.

3. Don't know why, but I never used to get more than 8KB/s download speed at my 512kbps connection.

4. "No Server Found" error now and then, when trying to connect.

5. They shut off everything 1 hour before and after(each) power cut.

6. A single glitch of thunderstorm and Alliance is down. So please don't even try to guess what happens in monsoon.

Well, all these are my personal experience, and it's been probably 2 years that I got shifted to BSNL.

And really never face any problem. Ya little downtime but that too rare. Can't even compare with Alliance.

I am on alliance since 09 , download speeds keeps good, upload speed was initially 1:1 then 1:3 and now its back 1:1[up:down] . Yeah power issues are there are RTO sometimes for me. No static IP problem . No problems with torrenting and uploading . Service has improved and those rain and thunderstorm dont happen anymore . BSNL will provide a much more secured line that it . Alliance will give LAN and peering. Speed on both is same for 770bucks .

My plans costs 770bucks

reliance wimax?

1.5 mbps / 1.5mbps up/down

~3k per month .

if you are a pure downloader with good browsing speeds required, this is the best option. its NO FUP

i end up doing 20gb a day combined traffic.
