Browsing centre setup - what networking components needed

Spectre

Discoverer
Hi,

One of my relatives is planned browsing centre with 4 PCs at startup
Airtel 512kpbs unlimited

Please let me know what networking devices would be needed for sharing this line for all 4 pcs, to be used together

i am n00b at networking and would appreciate inputs on this. Its a bit urgent TIS

8 port switch, 4 ethernet cards if the machines don't have onboard ethernet (unlikely :P), CAT5 cable to measure, RJ45 connectors x8.

Modem set to auto dial, connected to switch, machines connected to switch and u're done. In case u need to monitor usage (duration, bandwidth) of all individual machines, u'll need a cyber cafe management type software like Antamedia CC pro.

^^ A router is mostly for larger networks or where you might want to manage access rights, port forwardings, DHCP etc. etc. Since all (I think ;) ) ADSL modems are simplified routers, a switch will be more than enough for your needs.

Go here for more info on the difference between a router and switch.

Thanks...but that guy may plan to expand to say 7-8 PCs in near future, in that case, is it better to go for a router rather than a switch
