Alright so after a hectic day at work yesterday, I began the post-work stress buster activity (read gaming) by installing Brutal Legend on the PS3. And boy, this game just blew me away completely! I wonder how it skipped my list!

For starters, this game is a third-person action-adventure-RTS hybrid, wherein you step into the boots of Eddie Riggs (coined from Eddie the mascot for Iron Maiden and Derek Riggs who had created him), a roadie who is transported into a fantasy heavy metal world inspired by the genre's artwork found on album covers. The game is based on the real life experience of it's creative director - Tim Schafer, popular for creating the much acclaimed title - Pyschonauts and the Monkey Island series. Eddie is modeled after Jack Black who also lends his voice for the character. The results are those witty one-liners that puts Serious Sam and Duke to shame! Trust me when I say this, but he actually does! :D

Start the game and you have an amazing intro from Jack Black himself. Watch it here -

Post the intro cinematic, we are greeted with an amazing interactive menu unlike those usual boring types like Campaign, Multiplayer, Options, Credits, Exit. An album art titled Brutal Legend is presented, and the guy (presumably Jack Black himself) flips the covers as we press the start button, further ahead he takes the LP out of the cover, flips it and so forth. Pretty neat!

In the game, Eddie faces the foes from the other side who works for General Lionwhyte, who has slaves aka headbangers working for him. Eddie teams up with a small group of resistance fighters to free them from the clutches of the General. While exploring the map, there are several side missions that can be undertaken with the help of the wandering headbangers. For combat, Eddie has a broad axe called 'The Separator' and the Flying-V guitar called 'Clementine'. Clementine can cast a bunch of magical spells and she gets hot after continuos usage and needs to cool down. For transportation, Eddie uses a hot-rod called 'The Druid Plow' aka 'The Deuce'. She can be spawned anywhere from the world by playing a track by matching the notes - Eddie needs to press the combination correctly, more like the QTE. Deuce and other abilities for Eddie can be upgraded from Mangus, another guy who worships Heavy Metal. There are those occasional boss fights with some bad mutha with bad ass gauntlets guarding the area, watching over those slaves and we may have to beat him/her to progress further.

As for the OSTs, credits go to Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Static-X, Marilyn Manson, Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Slayer, 3 inches of Blood among others for the 107 Heavy Metal tracks in the game. :)

This game is the perfect idea of TP, fun and awesomeness. Gamers who love the Heavy Metal genre will definitely appreciate the game. Much more than the rest. I think my weekend is set. :ohyeah:

Damn that's sad! Did the gameplay become monotonous towards the later stages? Or was it something else?

On a single stretch from 7:30 to 12 yesterday, I had a solid time with the game and never found it boring. :P

I guess the RTS missions in the last couple of levels didn't really go down well with some people. I loved the last stages. They had some awesome vehicles and required some degree of stratergising to take out the enemy's defences.

Re: Anyone playing/played Brutal Legend?

Its a very good game and very different as well , I finished it last year, the side missions do get repetitive after a while and u are forced as well to do it to get rock points to buy and upgrade things.

About 3/4th into the game , the game becomes very dark and gloomy which I kinda didn't like , but otherwise its a kick ass game with very interesting characters , must play for anyone looking for some humor or a heavy metal rock fan. :D

Re: Anyone playing/played Brutal Legend?

Just completed the game and BOY, was I impressed! I loved the last stages - dark and true to the theme of the game. In fact, I got so engrossed (I am a sucker for RTS games!), I skipped the meal and gave it a full shot and completed it. Did not bother much with the side missions apart from the hunter's mission. Completed all the stages within this mission. Released around 30 odd serpents. Did few upgrades for the Axe and the guitar and I was set. The stage battles were pretty good. Beating Ophelia was a walk in the park and the last one from Doviculus was a b**ch! Each time I took a head off, he would send a bunch of his best guys and I was at the mercy of that thingamajig which would spawn a large sword at a point. Finally severed Doviculus' head off! It was a pretty neat climax with Ophelia shedding a black tear. Possible indication of a sequel perhaps? :D

While I was at it, I had ordered some fish handi and steamed rice during the last stage battle. After a quick shower, the meal was just plain awesome. :D

PC Announcement Trailer:

SUPER-NERDY GRAPHICAL AND PERFORMANCE DETAILS

Currently Brütal PC is in beta, which means we have more improvements planned before the full launch. Here’s a rundown.
The current version has the following:
• Much higher quality anti-aliasing (FXAA and SSAA). Users will be able to select these through the UI in a soon to come update.
• Support for resolutions > 720p (whatever your monitor/GPU will support).
• SSAO (screen-space ambient occlusion) which makes for better contact shadows and more solid looking objects.
• Major improvements to latency/lag in multiplayer, especially in large games or games where some players have very bad pings.
Updates over the next week or so will add:
• Uncapped (i.e. as fast as your GPU can handle) framerate.
• Support for high-fidelity (i.e. 60Hz) simulation in single player.
• Higher quality shadows.
• Increased draw distance (which users can tune to be larger or smaller if need be).
