i have been through numerous threads extolling the virtues of BSNL 3G network and ggprs over 3G network to access internet. yet, to my dismay i have found it to be untrue.
today i bought a new BSNL 3G SIM, it was activated within 10 minutes. then i called CC for the internet settings which they sent to me promptly.
then i hooked up my phone to the laptop and started surfing. i could notice the high latency, right from the start. to my consternation i also found that downloads are occurring over 1-12 kbps (avg 3.5 kbps).
display shows that i'm using 3.5G network, but the speeds are pathetic.

looking for suggestions from members to redress this issue.

lol

what redressal do you want

i have tested above 30kbps on browsing and 200kbps on downloads

the fact of the matter is you should check location and reception (thats the key)

what phone are you using? are you on GSM or 3g mode?

I have an MTNL 3G sim and I get around 800kbps-1200kbps depending on the time of the day. However, MTNL is not BSNL so take my comment with a grain of salt.

What's the cost of the plan? :)

I am sure BSNL 3G works absolutely fine. In those awesome days when the trick worked, i was able to use 3G on my 5230 phone connected to laptop and getting constant 2 Mbps+ speeds :D

phone used - nokia 5230 in UMTS mode (i.e. 3g mode).

speed has varied very little with change of location.

torrent download has been average @ 3.5-4 KBps.

but one saving grace is that browsing on the phone is superfast, alas these speeds are never reflected when used with my laptop.

Browsing speeds will be always low no matter what your bandwidth.
If you want to test a connection do a speedtest.net or download a 100 mb file from mediafire.

3.5 to 4 kBps is infact very low, even with only EDGE you can touch speeds of 30 kBps and with 3G you can touch upto 250kBps or more, i have personally tried that. So i am not sure why so low speeds you are getting :S

Dont consider the browsing speed on phone, with browsers like opera mini even on GPRS connections, the speeds are very good.

What you can do is download some file on phone using the phone browser / opera mini and then go to the settings -> connectivity -> connection manager and check the average download speeds you are getting.

Me second with BSNL 3G speeds of 2Mbps+ in 3G network on Ul 274 GPRS plan on a 2G sim.
