PUNE is slated to become the first city in the country where Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will launch multi player services through their broadband connection which would include a cable channels bouquet, video on demand, video conferencing, television to television SMS and e-classes. BSNL has kept August 15 as the trial launch date.

‘‘It is a national project but the pilot project is being experimented in Pune. If successful it would be replicated all over North India. In the South, Bangalore is initiating something similar but we hope to be the first in the country,’’ says Gopal Krishna Agarwal, principal general manager, BSNL, Pune.

BSNL has signed up with the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd (MKCL) to provide content. MKCL would be responsible for providing the technological platform for the delivery of the video-based services on the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ASDL) technology.

The partnership between BSNL and MKCL is on revenue sharing basis. ‘‘On our part, BSNL would be the carrier, providing all the infrastructure and permissions, while MKCL and their partners will provide the content and technical know-how. All that the consumer would require is a set top box, a landline and a television set that would also function as the monitor,’’ says Agarwal.

Though price of the service is yet to be determined, it will be competitive, he says, adding, ‘‘We are looking at a good number of popular channels to ensure people opt for our connection.’’. Talks with the channels for the tie-up are also on currently.

According to Vijay Bhatkar, eminent computer scientist, the service would make television highly interactive. ‘‘We hope to lay a lot of emphasis on e-learning,’’ says Bhatkar.

The project, on the anvil for sometime now, started gaining momentum about a year back. One of the technical companies involved in the project had demonstrated its ability to provide video and cable on demand last year to BSNL officials but no formal agreement took place at that time.

Clearly, the value-added service is aimed at increasing the consumer base and revenue for BSNL, especially from the landline segment. A service like this is expected to encourage people to retain their landlines as it comes loaded with a slew of other products. Currently, the city has a consumer base of 27,000 broadband customers.

"All that the consumer would require is a set top box, a landline and a television set that would also function as the monitor"
was it only me ..or they are planning on using a TV as the monitor for internet activity....if yes,i find very slim chances of any PC user to follow this plan....

they are better off instead spending money on providing higher speeds.

True params. I guess u had been reading some of the threads which I had created somewhat earlier or not. Anyway, to cut the long story short BSNL has been buying bandwidth from Airtel (some people here say VSNL) . I read some stuff from businessworld which says otherwise hence would be sticking to that :bleh: Now with the Reliance story unfolding with the decision coming that they would now be free to sell bandwidth from FLAG (now at 10 mbps going to 85 mbps soon) so they'll be looking forward to sell stuff. Also with the TRAI recommendation on NIXI
as from the horse's mouth as well as BSNL plan's to lay a link to Singapore after the Sri Lanka link & even that link is going to be fatter come diwali onwards.
Also Reliance has soft-launched in the city for quite sometime now. They're giving a dec. date for nationwide launch. So if u look they just can't sit back on plain vanilla broadband services. If they want to be relevant then they will have to constantly innovate. What's most interesting at this point in time is what set-top box they will be using . Most probably they will go for Huewei as their technology parther as they've been the ones to set-up the broadband project. Read this press relese Huawei .

Trai has always laid rules on ISP's. like the 256kbps to be min for for broadband advertising. How many ISP's have actually followed it?

They would try to circumvent stuff but with competition they'll 've to pull up their game. With prices dropping everyday of voice & data transfer dropping every day they can't take people for a ride every time. I'm optimistic in this.
