BSNL DNS woes redux

It depends..some times all sites are down, torrent works flawlessly..
Sometimes random websites dont open..
When this happens, i make windows dial the connection and change the settings in th router..Everything works fine:S

Doesnt look like a DNS problem. I think BSNL routers are POSes. Sites werent accessible in the morning but are now albeit at a snails pace...

I suspect/predict in a few days we'll hear news of some cyber attack on India from Pak :D

edit: just as i posted this speeds seem to be picking up again... lets see if this was just a regular "outage" or some other sinister reason

I couldnt find the thread in a hurry. mods can merge this with that if required :ashamed:

just one doubt , I tried changing the DNS here on linux, didnt help. Should i change it in my router as well?

what did you change it to? if your local dns setting doesnt point to the router it doesnt matter... i was using opendns and another one 4.2.2.2 (level 2) i think (no bsnl dns) and still faced the problem

Once again, doesnt looks like a DNS issue, most likely a server/router issue with BSNL or its "provider" VSNL

You can check by running a traceroute (tracert in Windows) to the destination and you will see the IP addresses show up fine (if DNS is ok) but the responses get lost in the intermediate IPs...

Lenex ?:hap2: which mode? bridge mode or router dialer?(dhcp) ?

I presume ,it is bridge mode ,where you dial from Linux to connect to internet.

for that ,in debian based distros ,you hafta edit /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider or whatever the file which you used.

just put a "#" on "usepeerdns" line.that is ,now it should look "#usepeerdns" .save it and exit.

now add whatever DNS you want to use ,in /etc/resolv.conf :)

for eg: I currently use opendns and it works fine.

so for opendns ,add :

Code:
[I]prakash@praka:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf [/I]

[B]nameserver 208.67.222.222

nameserver 208.67.220.220[/B]

Btw... an easy fix for this problem is to change it to bridged and then dialing up to connect each time. Dunno why but that solves the DNS issue even though that makes it a hassle to turn on the connection each time :D.

@ praka123- yup I got my install running again. when My windows install died, i figured it was worth a try :P

I'm using my WiFi router's pppoe dialer. My system is configured to use static IP, and I gave the list of DNS's there.

Anyway not an issue now since its working right anyway :)
