hello guys i just joined a micro finance firm and the job requires me moving all over Bangalore. to stay connected i am thinking of buying an evdo modem from a guy on other forum. now i have some doubts i want to clarify please help me out

1.) what do i have to do to activate the service on the modem, i mean do i have to buy any specific sim for the EVDO service

2.) Can i get the service from the BSNL even when i am not having any land line connection from them and i am not having any identity proof from Karnataka

(i have a DL and a voter id that mentions my U.P. Address)

3.) If any one is using the service in S. Bangalore can he tell me how is the service in terms of speed

1. No separate sim for EVDO. All you need is the device and your user id/password (which BSNL will provide), and you are good to go.

2. Yes (Landline not needed). No (For id proof it is okay, but I doubt if BSNL will provide you without your address proof. At least try to get a letter from your office mentioning your address).

3. No comments.

I'm not really sure about how BSNL operates in this regard, so wait for someone else to reply to your query.

With due respect sir , BSNL Evdo is not that popular due to weak signals, low speeds and absence of towers

You should go for Tata Photon though it offers FUP of max 10GB . BSNL Evdo signal strength is very weak and speeds are around 115 kbps where there are no towers

So first check whether you have a BSNL Evdo tower nearby

I liven on bannerghatta road and the speed sucks I get 20 to 60 kbps very disappointed with it1 guys how is photon by the way:)

^ I have been getting over 100KB during downloads! Very happy with it.

I am presuming that you are downloading from a fixed location & there is a EVDO tower nearby, so you may be getting good speeds

The OP proposes to use it while he is moving around Bangalore & I doubt if that using a BSNL modem would be advisable in view of lesser number of towers of BSNL vis a vis other operators

I think if assured connection is important for you no matter where you are, I think Photon or Reliance may be a better choice although slightly costlier.

I do not use all 3..just common sense..Take your own decision.

If the EVDO seller is a local guy & has a valid EVDO account, maybe you can convince him to allow you to use the connection for a day to check the efficiency while you are roaming before buying.

The OP works for a micro finance firm, assuming speed isnt important then the Bsnl evdo is perfect. Evdo works everywhere in bangalore and can even operate at cdma 1x mode where there are no towers.

More importantly tata photon plans are 2x the cost of evdo and isnt truly unlimited.
