Hello Guys,

I have applied for BSNL dataone and after one month wait, I finally got the information that my net connection is activated. But the modem guy needs to come to my house to configure the same.

I am thinking of buying modem and configuring myself ... Please let me know which modem to buy and is it possible to enable the net myself or some password is required.

Thanks in advance !!

Its not possible to enable net urself. adsl connection is activated from the telephone exchange. also u can buy the modem the bsnl guys give on outright purchase. it would cost around rs1200 and would be added in telephone bill.

username and password would be given by the bsnl person while configuring the modem.

Actually i have informed them that i have the modem. So they gave me the username and password for me to configure myself.

Iam a complete zero in this regard. So guys, please help me out.

Its very simple. Get yourself an adsl modem ( do a search here ) and config it.. configuration is also simple(head to 192.168.1.1 and you'll figure out I think) .

senfunn:

which city are you in?

you can take Buffallo / netgear / linksys modems as per your cohice and budget.

infact configuring the modem is not hard if you have the password and username.

first you have to put your hands on a modem.

secondly if you have someone known using bsnl in nearby vicinity go their place and findout the DNS servers. \
for this you need to type ipconfig /all at the command prompt. which will give you a list of numbers note down primary and secondary DNS servers.

voila you are ready to setup.

buzz here with your modem type someone will help you out. :D

Model Dlink GLB 502 T

Its easy . Connect the model with the computer either with USB cable(supplied) or cat5 cable.( you need to buy one). if you connect through USB.. you need to install the driver for that. Once you choose the type of connection. you need to setup the network configuration and assign your computer IP address of 192.168.1.2. ( you need to load the ethernet card driver if you never used the ethernet card earlier. These are usually in motherboard driver CD) The modem is having default ip of 192.168.1.1.

After this open the internet explorer on your machine, switch on the modem and give URL as 192.168.1.1 and you will get the user/id for the modem. Its admin/admin. Go to configuration(expore the various menu you find there) and you need to set two parameters

VPI =0
VCI=35

After that save the configuration and logout of modem.

Make new connection from my network connections as broadband connection which needs a user/password. This will be PPPoE connection.

now you need to use this new connection and supply the password. Your broadband must be running.

PS just see that the LAN indicator on your modem is on before you connect to broadband.

I hope this helps you out.

dont use the USB connectivity, but use the LAN connectivity.
that way connection is more stable and hasselfree.

Guys I got the Linksys W200G modem+router....

Now I think i need a splitter ... which i forgot for the connection ... ?!? is it right ??

What type modem is this .. ?? and what r the settings to be done ?? ...

your modem is Linksys WAG200G.

Its builtin ADSL 2/2+ modem and wouter with 4 lan ports and wifi capabilities.

You dont need to have splitter to setup the connection but incoming call will disconnect the net if you dont have the splitter so better you have it.

Now the setup.

Firstly connect the power cable.
Connect the phone line.
Connect the router to Pc via lan (put one end to port no. 1 on router and one end on lan card of the pc.)

As the router does not have power switch it will go on straight away you put on the main switch.

Go to Setup a new connection wizard (in connect to menu)
select setup an internet connection option then
select setup my connection manually then
select connect using Broadband connection that requires username and password for connecting then
provide the ISP name in next page then
Provide the user name and password lastly click finish.

NOw your connection in PC is ready.
You need to put up a few numbers in.

right click on the icon of the connection you just created above.
click on properties.
click on networking
select the tcp/ip option then click on properties.
here you need to select the option of get the ip address automatically. and get the dns address automatically, click on ok twice and you are through.

Now open internet explorer
type 192.168.1.1 press enter
it will ask for username and password which is admin / admin by default.

after that you will be taken to setup page of your modem.

In the menu there is first option Setup and first supoption basic setup.
Put the options as below :
Encapsulation : RFC **** PPPoE
Multiplexing : LLC
Qos Type : UBR
Autodetect : Disabled
Virtual Circuit : 0 VPI and 35 VCI
Dsl Modulation : G.dmt

Put in your user name and password
Local IP address 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
DHCP server : enabled
Starting IP address 192.168.1.100
Maximum Number of Users : anything between 1-99
Now you need DNS servers of your area.
get it from your friend/ relative / neighbour
Primary or Static DNS 1
Secondary or Static DNS 2

Time Date:
(GMT +5.00) Pakistan, Russia (they dont have option of India here :@ :@ )
Now second option DDNS disabled.

Third Option Advance routing
NAT ; enabled
RIP : disabled

These are your basic settings, now you can save settings and when confirmed allow the modem to reboot and you are ready to go.

Now if you are going to use wifi or not gonna use it you have to setup security options and restrict the access. that we will deal later after you successfully setup the router.

Hope this helped.

PS : i have the same router and these are the setting which work for me i hope it also works for you. Otherwise there are more experts here to help you out :D

I got the Net connection up !!! Thanks to Medpal....

I had to call customer care twice...
1. They messed up with my password.
2. DNS was surprisingly 192.168.1.1

I tried the speed tests and i got miserable 24Kbps .... even though i have upto 2mbps connection.

Any specific reason for this ?? I have enabled the wireless router and browsed thru with my laptop too...

Low speed is because of improper DNS.

i dont think 192.168.1.1 can be DNS address.
