MADURAI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is all set to introduce some of its next generation Internet services.

The new scheme titled `Broadband Multiplay' will have voice, video and Internet protocol television (IPTV) services in one package. While at present the connectivity speed of BSNL broadband connection is two megabits per second (MBPS), the new technology will enable connectivity at a speed of eight MBPS.

The IPTV service will enable access to content providers who will offer "content on demand." A `set top box,' either on a rental basis or outright purchase, will be provided to consumers to access this facility.

To be launched in 789 cities all over the country shortly, the requisite infrastructure was being put in place, a senior official said here on Monday. The feasibility study of the project had been completed and the equipment was being delivered to the sites for installation.

Madurai would be the base for the services offered in and around the city. It would be provided based on parameters such as density of customers in the vicinity of BSNL telephone exchanges and number of `Bfone' subscribers. In the initial stage, the project would be implemented using copper wires.

A new futuristic technology, `Fibre to the home,' was in the final stage of technical valuation, the official said and expressed the hope that it would be implemented by the year-end.

This might be good news as long as atleast a NU plan is there, otherwise...lol time to look at long dsl bills...

I hope Babulog introduce only Mbps speed in FTTH with good Upload speed . :) otherwise there is no use of fiber .

Surprisingly , BSNL has been implementing some of the plans rather on time ..

They upgraded the 500 Plan to 2MBPS plan providing a bonanza for all the Home Users

I been on BSNL since 2005 i guess and hv only experienced downtime abt 4-5 times only .. and wid even airtel not being able to sustain that mch .. i hv frnds living in other sectors (noida) where i hv seen them throwing their mices cuz they didn had their Airtel connection server free for them ..

Maybe a month or two here and there.. if this plan comes into effect this possibly wil force other ISPs to launch sch plans of their own.. which means we gonna hv the advantage .. maybe ..

Only concern is that BSNL provides sch crappy caps wid the dwnloads.. u seem to think of urself as a Retd Army Guy wid a Gun sans the bullets.. (no offence to Armed forces ppl intended)

Hmm, well the NU plan of BSNL is nice...

Another brick in the wall ofcourse is that BSNL has stopped giving new landline/DSL connections in most areas....

@ deepak

i heard that the landline connections for BSNL dropped so badly that they promised to provide free landline connections to ppl who hv their bills in excess of 2k i guess...???

ofcource the incomings are free on the FREE connection .. the person pays for making the calls at reg rate ... Idiots .... :P
