ok its no joke...

I can't comment on speeds.. maybe one of you can check... But this looks like a good offer.

GENERAL PACKET RADIO SERVICE (GPRS)/ WAP/ MMS on Mobile
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) offers high speed data services in GSM network. It uses Packet Mode Technique to transfer data and provides connectivity to Internet. Users will be able to browse Internet using handsets supporting Internet browsing. They will also be able use their e-mail accounts as is being done through landline Internet access. Also browsing of Internet from Laptops and Desktop computers is possible by connecting the computer with the GPRS enabled mobile handset through a data cable or Infrared connectivity.

Hmm even if its a dialup speed, its still gonna be cheaper than the bphone which costs 500 or 400(rural) + your unlimited connection
Anyway me trying to get the speeds checked.. anyone else got idea on this?

hmmm...but this requires BSNL connection :P and it'll be sucky slow i guess...it takes years to load a page in my sis's hutch GPRS

i guess the speed was always a suspect... :P
but they claim lot.. i can't believe it will be slower than dialup

safin says:
what speed he gets?
Sunny says:
lol..got reply
Sunny says:
connection speed was like...300kbps
Sunny says:

Sunny says:
saw it once
safin says:
are you joking
Sunny says:
gets instantly connected

< i am running to the nearest BSNL office > :ohyeah:

GPRS speed 171.2 kbps
While GSM offers a speed of maximum 14 kbps, that is 1/4 of the connection speed currently been provided by dialups, GPRS offers a connection speed that is literary three times your dial-up speeds or 171.2 kbps. Such high speeds though are unlikely to be seen, as networks would share the available bandwidth between multiple users. As earlier stated, GPRS can be used in an existing GSM network in order to communicate with any other application or network that uses packet switching. Through the GPRS enabled GSM service you can connect to the Internet for a lot more features at a much higher speed than the other technologies do offer. Now, with the help of GPRS systems one doesn't have to wait long in connecting the Internet and accessing its mail or transferring the desired information from the net.

and read this

Hello I am from Pune, I am using AirTel GPRS(150 Rs per month) through Samsung C100 mobile(Rs 4700) and a datacable (Rs 300) connected to my PC[People using net inside mobile accessing WAP sites are nothing but are stupids bcoz the quality, data content access depends upon the mobile we choose]. The driver cd included with the GPRS software. Just we have to make connection. Is VV simple. Speed/bandwidth is just 14 KBPS – thats ok(in Rs 150 pm).
Advantages:
1]Its cheapest net connection
2]Full time use+ downloads ( NO EXTRA COST!!!!!)
3]Can be connected to PC,Laptop
4]No extra modem charges
5]Better than BSNL/VSNL dialups -always on peak hours –never connects on time.

well i don't think its that bad an alternative to dialup. Depends on the whole day performance though

Some more reading at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPRS

Your phone's GPRS class is an important factor as well in deciding the actual speed you get. ;)

If you notice they've mentioned at wikipedia that you can attain a 57.6 kbit/s download speed and a 14.4 kbit/s upload speed on a GPRS Class 8/10 (the highest class) connection. Theoretically seems about on par with dial-up, but there are many other factors.

yeah, the only good thing about GPRS is taht u can log in instantly. Less than 2 seconds.
As for speed, it sux. B/W is shared, not only among data users, but voice users too, so u get useless speeds.

For those who want detailed information on setting up with PC or latpop reffer

But Dont forget to give above username , password and grps Accesspoint as mentioned
But belive me the speed really sucks.. We have to wait for ever for pages to load....at Peak time

Well TE members,

I am using it since it was started in my place(Well i live in a place where even Dataone or unlimited dialup 2nd Bfone does not exist, & we have no other ISP other than BSNL)
I started using it since 6th June 2005. The main thing is that it depends on

1. Signal reception on ur mobile( the tower indicator in mobile must be almost full to get conncted & to get good speeds)

2. The class of ur mobile( i have a SE k508i mobile which has a class 10 GPRS support)

Well now abt the performance..

1. Well its true that it gets connected instantly(within 10 sec) & it shows speed of 115.2 kbps but actual speeds are between 2.5-4 KB/s at day & 4-6.5 KB/s at night when the signal strength on my mobile is 100%

2. There are lot of downtimes. Currently my GPRS is down & I am posting this on my good old dialup.

So I would rather tell u people not to use that as generally signal reception inside house is not always near 100%.of course if u reside in very close to tower & can live with the downtimes of BSNL, u can hail it.

I have no other option but to stay with this, (because I have already downloaded more than 1.5 GB on my GPRS connection in this 1 & half months in the time it is ok for me rather than my dialup)

Hope the abobe info enlightens u people.
