At first I didn't think a FHD screen would be essential to me so I decided on the HP DV6 6017tx but now people have told me that if one would be coding heavily then he should definitely take a FHD screen, and that makes sense.

So what option do I have available within 55k? I'm willing to downgrade to an i5 if that helps stay within the budget. There'll be no GPU as good as the 6770 within 55k with FHD but I want something close.

Well, either you go for a XPS 15, you'll get the GT540M GPU, which is somewhat better than the HD6630M.

Or the HP DV6, which will give the HD6770M GPU.

Now decide if the stronger GPU or FHD display is higher priority.

You won't get i7 + FHD within 55k. Infact you have NO choice if you are strict with your budget - only Sony Vaio CB15 for 51-52k. Dell XPS 15 with i5 2410M + Nvidia GT 525M + B+RG FHD screen costs 58k now. ( Seems Dell has increased the prices slightly and dropped the 47k base XPS 15, now the cheapest XPS 15 is 53k.) Even if you stretch your budget for the XPS 15 there is no improvement specs wise as the 6630M in the CB15 is slightly superior to GT525. And you still don't get an i7 but the same processor as in Vaio.

So now its between Vaio CB15 and HP DV6 6017/6021.

I would personally recommend the Vaio because it is an exceptional VFM product as well - Full HD high quality screen, backlit keyboard, decent CPU+GPU, great design,no heating/fan issues and better after sales and long term reliability compared to the HP. Yes you will lose around 10 fps in games but if gaming is really your priority then get the DV6. But if programming, watching FHD movies, browsing are primary requirements then the CB is a no brainer.

Hm. Tough decision to make. I don't game much now but I might in college. On the other hand, I do browse the internet a lot and will be programming a lot too.

Does the Vaio come with Onsite warranty? The HP and Dell do.

I'm seriously considering the CB15. Will the FPS drop be only around 10?

Yes Sony does offer on site warranty, 1 year onsite warranty is free on certain models. For the C I think you need to pay extra. Not sure, ask the dealer. And as for the fps drop im taking some numbers from notebookcheck for your reference below:

Call of Duty Black Ops Medium

6630 - 55.9 fps

6770 - 58.8 fps

Fifa 11 Medium

6630 - 158 fps

6770 - 251 fps

Starcraft 2 Medium

6630 - 50 fps

6770 - 70 fps

Battlefield Bad Company 2 Medium

6630 - 41 fps

6770 - 69 fps

Risen Medium

6630 - 30

6770 - 49

Need for Speed Shift medium

6630 - 30 fps

6770- 46 fps

Colin McRae Dirt 2

6630 - 55 fps

6770 - 66 fps

So yes it varies game to game and the difference is greater than 10 in almost every game. But basically the numbers that 6630 delivers are not unplayable or "bad" unless you are a hardcore gamer.

^^^

You are right but OP did not mention he wants to game at FHD resolution and the DV6 does not have a FHD screen. To game at FHD in a laptop one must pay atleast 1.10 lacs. So ability to game at 1080p is irrelevant at this price point

I went to a few big stores (Jumbo electronics, Reliance Digital etc.) but I couldn't see a single HP Laptop. I saw the Sony laptop in question. In my opinion, the FHD screen seems like a waste at 15 inches. Everything seemed tiny. But yeah, FHD videos looked very well. And I can see how it'd help me in programming. But I don't think it's worth the downgrade to an i5 and 6630. Right now an i5 and 6630 seem sufficient but 4 years later, they'd be very outdated and an i7+6770 would be passable.

So I'll visit an HP Showroom and take a look at the 6121tx's screen. I'll take it if I like it.
