budget home theater in a box or dvd player+speakers

hello,
i was looking for a good speaker system+dvd player.its main purpose is music,
and occasional movie watching.
itll be used with some 42 incher lcd tv(already purchased,no idea which, but im told cost a bomb).
it should come with a dvd player, with support for a good number of formats, and usb support.support for my WD external hdd will be appreciated.are there any players which support mkv rips?
type of music played-mostly classical, and occasional rock and the likes.i like songs which go boom-boom so nice bass with clarity'll be an advantage.

i thought of using a mx5021 which i have,but,i want a 5.1 system atleast.

now,my biggest constraint is budget.i went inquiring, and see that HT systems which tout 300-600w rms start from 10k,so i'll limit my budget to max 13-14k including the dvd player, cannot spend more than that.

also, aftersales support should be good.i heard philips got dodgy ASS,is that true?
i just went and had a look at some players from sony and philips, didn't audition them .
the models i saw were
sony
DAV-TZ200,dav tz210.dav tz130. 9k-12k
philips
hts 3511e,hts 3520. 11k-13k
there were some older models, but, according to their respective sites i guess these are the newer ones.
i dont know how good these are,and know that itll be a step down from a 5021,but,i my budget limits me and i want good value for the money spent.i am open to other brands, but, they should have good service.
kindly advice.

Go for sony for the kind of budget you have or look for second hand system that comes in your budget.

Panasonic also makes integrated systems.

Philips is not much worth IMO.

I am using Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX and I am much satisfied(better than non-sense 5.1 system).

When you take demo observe that dialogues are clearly delivered by sytem.

i see.thanks.i doubt ill get any good used ones in my city, think ill buy new sets.which one to choose in sony?

No idea with the particular model , but I have Sony 290k in my dining room , dude try to get Audition of the speakers before you make the purchase

Dav-tz210. :)

The 210 model comes in your budget and is pretty good , or else you can try some hometheaters at ezoneonline.in or futurebazaar.com

saw the tz 210 model, couldnt hear it out as the salesman wasnt interested.i saw on the internet that it has some sort of proprietary jacks for audio.so,i wont be able to connect other speakers?so,i was wondering,if it is better to buy a separate dvd player and speakers to go with it?so that i can attach a better speaker system to the dvd player if i get a upgrade or something?what about pc speakers?

so,which do i go for?min 10k,max budget of 13.for both?

what about samsung?

Go for Philips 3571, I own it & and swear by it. Its killer for its price. I prefer Philips over Sony in HTS. If u insist on Sony there is 390. But I wud take 3571 anyday over Sony. Samsung are no gud in HTS, just crap. I have demoted/used/purchased all three, And....... 3571 anyday.

+1.

Lost count of the number of times I have recommended this HTiB in the forums before and finally got one for myself about 3 months back for a good bargain. This was the display piece on the e-zone showroom (luckily in good shape wrapped in polythene packaging!) and I grabbed it without any hesitation. Price paid - 16k. Well worth it I'd say.

This one accepts both the digital inputs - spdif coaxial and toslink and this was the sole reason I bought the set. The only other alternative was to buy an AVR and perhaps a pair of bookshelves but since I had few upgrade plans clogged in the pipeline, I decided to ditch it and settle with a decent 5.1 for the time being. I guess it paid off.

The only downside is the bass is slightly overpowered and boomy for a small room and thus I had to seal the port of the s/w by stuffing few old socks. The sats however performs pretty well without any excess treble. DTS signals are auto detected and switched to depending on the source - if the .mkv file has it, or if the game has it.

Oh and this model is discontinued so chances are you will not find one in the outlets as of today.

See my friend , you cannot connect any big speakers to any of your DVD players , because the DVD players are budget friendly, you need good receiver to power up some big speakers or power hungry speakers like floorstanders or center or sub woofer . . . Any the receiver starts at 14k (without speakers and DVD players )
I have dav-290k and I have connected my jamo e660 floorstanders as front speakers (the Jamo e660 woofers doesn't work and midrange gives half of the performance because of less power output from the DVD players )
From the wire that comes with Sony hometheaters can be used to connect other speakers .

Kindly tell me your perfect needs , if you are tight with your budget then stick with home theaters because they come with no maintenance .

If you want to try some real home theater surround effect like you hear in multiplex then you have to buy receiver 15k , 1k for the cable , 12k for the speakers and subwoofer and finally a reputed pioneer DVD player for 3k and final price is 31k :(

sorry for the late reply
usage-music 55% and movies 45%.i have a lot of original dvds,so want to get the best(or as much as possible) experience out of a cheap htib system.
music-mainly carnatic music and the like(dont :P me),and some occasional "club remixes"
and,i wont be raising the volume above 40~45%,so id prefer decent sound quality at a decent volume.i know its asking for too much at a low budget.
sorry if i am being vague, because i thought it was a simple matter of getting a dvd player, and some decent powered PC 5.1 or so speakers, using cable converters and connecting the pc speakers to the dvd player.i havent used a dvd player in years, and dont know how they are now, thought they all came with multiple type o/p jacks, like 3.5mm jacks, etc.
as for philips,i have to search if the 3571 is available.many other newer models for around 12 k from philips are available.one with 'Digital coaxial in' for 17k(do i need that?).how is ASS for philips?warranty?
onkyo 3100 is available at some shop in bangalore, just one or two pieces left,16.5k.adding a dvd player takes the total to like 19-20k.thats beyond my budget.
so,is the tz 210 my only option in my budget limit?please guide.

If U can't find 3571, u can presently available philips in ur budget. (5530,3510 etc.). In general Philips are better than others in HTS. You can also check Sony 390 as I earlier mentioned.
