I have a BSNL UL650 connection - 4Mbps till 12GB and 1Mbps after that.

At present use a BSNL WA3002G4 modem. With a Netgear 614 router.

Earlier modem was free, now BSNL has started charging rental of Rs 100/month.

Is it worth buying a modem and give up the BSNL one, if yes, which modem?

Pl. help. Thank you for your time.

Yes, buy a modem and use that.

If you pay 100 INR per month, with taxes, comes to about 112.5, 12 months, works to 1350. You can easily get a new modem with 3 yrs warranty for that.

@Spacescreamer : Thank you for the reply.

I see that the DLink has a USB port, can I use a 3G stick like the Reliance NetConnect with the modem?

I do have a router, as mentioned above.

I am not able to find the link. This is rural combo plan in AP. Just checked my latest bill - it is called BB Home Combo ULD650 - 4Mbps till 25GB, after that 1Mbps. This was launched ~3 months back, could actually watch a youtube video (earler had to download using keepvid, to see something usefull!).

Consistency of speed is very good - I d/l 24x7; line is up 99% of the time.

BSNL promises upto 4Mbps and their own troubleshooting team guy said that it isnt successful as per his observation.
The speeds pretty much like the keyword 'upto' .

Maybe your plan is exclusive for the region. Hence couldnt find it.

As for the modem, the compatibility is mentioned on the link page itself.
Afaik, DSL modem has limited compatibility with dongles, but the TP Link one has been a better option. Has wider range of functionalities and 3G dongle compatibility, better RMA procedure, and not to forget.. D Link model has had issues with its hardware at times.

@Spacescreamer : thanks once again. What about this one - TPLink 8817. I intend to buy the combo like the suggested 8968 or better when I need to change the router also. Dongle compatibitlity is not a deal breaker, I do not get a good signal for the Reliance Netconnect & none at all for the Tata DoCoMo.

Many people have told me TP Link is not good. You could try D-Link or Asus. If you are planning to get a wifi modem try D-Link 2730U or Asus DSL N10E

I would suggest to not use D-Link if you are looking at the USB feature, since it is compatible with their own dongles only.

TP Link or ASUS are better choices.

Or just pay 600 to the BSNL chap, he will give you a modem. And continue with your existing setup

USB is not essential, just noticed the feature that's all. Will try that @vivek.krishnan ! else will go for the TPLink, with snapdeall app should be quite OK. Payback in 6 months.[DOUBLEPOST=1403427202][/DOUBLEPOST]@Spacescreamer : best way to ensure speed on BSNL is talk personally to the JE in your area. He can (he did for me) set up & ensure the speed remains consistent.

If your current modem is working well, its probably safe to just buy it outright as vivek said.

Or else check your modem for SNR values and check if the margins are decent enough for you to manage with any modem you buy; and try to find out how far you are from the local exchange.
Broadcom xDSL chipsets as used in the Dlink 2520U are better at longer distances from the exchange/low SNR values (although I think I read of someone on the forum having reliability issues with his 2520U). The TP-link 8817 uses a Trendchip xDSL chipset AFAIK which is decent as long as your line conditions are fabourable too.

P.s.: You could upgrade your WiFi router to one with a USB port instead of looking for a modem with a USB port.

The modem I bought from BSNL went kaput. I bought the Asus DSL N10E and configured it myself. I have the Home 500 combo plan and speed is always consistent
