Need a notebook for my brother. Budget around 1000$. Buying from US. Preferred:Turion 64 CPU+ATI Radeon graphics, but centrino will do as long as it doesnt come with GMA900 :P. Must be widescreen. I looked at hp which seems to be the best deal.

This is coming for around 900$:
Pavilion DV5000z:
Turion 64 1.8GHz
512MBx1
15.4" 1280x800 display
128MB X300 hypermemory
60GB HDD
8X DVD Burner
Wireless.

If you know of a better deal

Bump...and not meaning to hijack your thread, but me too looking ofor a similar deal...

Basically looking for a lappy for Dad & mom.....

I too have very smiilar requirements, bt another important parameter for me is that the lappy should be moderately light-weight, hence looking at 12.1"- 14" screens...preferably widescreen

Also, since they won't use it for gaming (obviously), I'll be OK with Celeron-M based on Intel 915 chipset .....

So i'd be willing to pick up a lighter & thinner Celeron M based lappy instead of a heavier P-M at the same price point

I was also looking at the Dell XPS-140/630m series and the Toshiba M45 which also fall in around the same price point....

Suggestions plz :)

^^You might wanna look at the hp V2000Z series. Its just 5.2 pounds and the base config is 650$. Comes with a sempron by default but 50$ gets u a turion. Totally worth it IMHO. The XPS-140 is too expensive for the price.

If you're buying the laptop from US, you can get new Acer TM4202WLMI, it comes around $1200.Its got Intel Core Duo proccessor, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD, 15.4'' wide screen gma950 graphics core, which is quite better than its predecssor gma900.Also has a good battery life.

I saw the v2405z today and it'd have been an extremely nice buy but fr the fact that the body and everything else (but of course the proccy/mobo) is exactly the same as my Compaq V2000 (P-M based)...

I mean it is basically a different wine in the same bottle, but then again, don't really want almost exactly the same looking lappy for them too :P

Any idea how Gateway machines are?...There's a nice 15.4" WXGA coming for 700 (Celeron-m based) but I have never met anyone who uses a gateway :bleh:

Also, any comments on the Toshiba M55? The celeron-M based M55 with 14" WXGA is also coming for 700....

^^Gateway=crap bad reliability issues. The toshiba maybe okay.

@Hitman: I have a hard 1000$ limit. Also I absolutely need dedicated graphics. Intel won't do. Dual core would be nice but in a laptop, its not a necessity.

dual cores are all currently above 1200
As for dell,
theer's P-m 735 based 700m (ultra thin & light) for ~950/- but that's based on the old (400mhz IE2 gfx chipset, think that';s called 855chipset)
then ther's the 630m for ~750/- with the 533mhz, intel 915 chipset which seems to be a good deal but is not as portable as the 700m

now i am all confused
