need to assemble a PC for my bro.he's already got the monitor,keyboard-mouse,speakers,modem of the old PC.so got to get everything inside the cabby + printer(MFD if budget permits).budget is 25k max(lower the better).
he needs it mainly for project work, internet, storing music/movies,and some gaming(at low settings).plus should be able to run Vista.
please give your suggestions.

Get an AMD A64 3800+ X2+ asus m2n mobo for some 11k..

Transcend 1 gb ddr2 533 for 5k..

Seagate/Samsung 160 gb sata for 3.1k..

Sony DVD rW 18x for 2.1k

Cabinet+400 w smps for 1.5k

Geforce 7300 gs for 3.2k

You can reduce the price by going for a 80 gb hdd and maybe get a asus m2n-vm mobo with onboard graphics and thus save the 3.2k on the gfx card..mind u, onboard gfx sucks..sooner or later u'd want to upgrade..so get the gfx card..:)

should i go in for a pentium D or AMD X2,since gaming is not a priority.is there any chance of squeezing in a C2D.
plus i need a printer also in 25k.

C2D..Not possible.. Cos even if u go for the lowest E6300+intel G965 mobo, the combo will cost like 13.5-14k..1 gb DDR2 ram will cost another 5k..so only ur cpu, mobo n ram eat up like 19-20k..forget graphic card and printer, u wont even be able to adjust hdd, dvd-rw and cabinet in the remaining 5k...

A64 3800+ X2 will give ample performance for the needs u've mentioned here and it fits ur budget..:)

ok then, which mobo should i go for with the X2?i need one with decent onboard graphics.
also which printer?can i get a all-in-one for 4k?

U can go for the Asus M2N-VM DH with the geforce 6100 onboard gfx chip or the Asus M2NPV-VM with the geforce 6150 gfx chip..the latter wud be better..but a bit more expensive..dont know about the price though..shud be around 6-7k..check with ur local dealer..the geforce 6150 provides decent grafix for the price..u can play games like nfs underground at low settings..but dont be too optimistic..frame rates considerably go down even at medium setting..n dont even think about playing games like fear n oblivion...they are not playable even at low settings..i am saying this because i've seen the results myself... my friend has M2n-vm dh...it just about gets the job done..:)

yeah..the most important, power consumption and heat issue with the Pentium D, and u can also check the benchmarks at tech sites..the x2 is a much better performer than a competing Pentium D and not so only in games...it consumes lot less power and is cool n quiet...so dont make an impression tht the x2 will only be good if playing games...the 3800 x2 in particular, is a very good overall performer..:)

went to a local dealer and got these prices:

C2D E6300 + intel946 mobo-Rs.12,500
1GB transcend DDR2 RAM-Rs.4,800
160GB SATA Samsung HDD-Rs.2,950
DVD Writer Sony-Rs.1,900
iBall cabinet with 400W SPMS-Rs.1,900
total=Rs.23,550.

got a few more quotes:
HP 2360(printer)-Rs.2,350
HP F380(MFD)-Rs.4,450

speakers:
altec lansing MX5021-Rs.7,700
logitech X230-Rs.2,750

what do you guys think?

Other prices i dont know but 1900 for a IBALL cabi with the SMPS that it gives is i think expensive , i balls wht i have seen are for like 1200 - 1300 and some better looking ones 1500.

Yep pricing looks quite fine.

- What speed is the Transcend DDR2 ? If its 533Mhz should be quite enough at stock speeds.

- Why a Samsung? Get a Seagate, Hitachi instead. Pricing should be the same.

- The current Sony DVD Writers arent all that great. Opt for an LG H10/H12n instead or even an Asus 1608P3S. The LG should be priced similarly or even cheaper , the Asus may be around 100 bucks more.

- Get a power supply with more guts in it than the iBall PSU. Get the iBall cabby if you want, put opt for a Powersafe PSU instead. I hear there are Powersafe 400W dual 12v Rail PSU's for around 1.5k or so, quite decent.

- I'm not too sure about this, but i thought the F380 was an earlier model and there's a newer model out? (Guess someone else can confirm this)

- About the MX5021 price, not too sure cause Mumbai pricing for the MX was always quite high.

i have decided on the following configuration:
C2D E6300 + intel946 mobo-Rs.12,500
1GB transcend DDR2 533MHz RAM-Rs.4,700
160GB SATA Seagate HDD-Rs.2,800
DVD Writer Sony/LG-Rs.1,800
iBall cabinet with 400W SPMS-Rs.1,200
total=Rs.23,000.

now,my budget has increased to 30k,so that leaves 7k to get:
1.printer or all-in-one(depending on the cost)
and
2.speakers 2.1(decided to upgrade from the cheap 2.0 set)

please could you give suggestions for either of the combinations:
a.printer and 2.1 speakers
or
b.all-in-one and 2.1 speakers
within the budget of 7k with approx prices of each.

Dont you need a graphic card.... If I had 7k this is what I would do:

1) Get a Creative 128 bit live soundcard for 1.3k

2) Get a 7300 GT or 6600 GT from market place or retail at around 4k

3) Get decent creative 2.1 speakers for your system for 1.7k

Thats all.

Instead of the 946 chipset,Ucan go for an intel 965 mobo which has onboard intel extreme graphics X3000,Which is sufficient for gaming at low resolutions.Might cost around 2K more,But definitely worth it.That leaves u with 5k.So the only economical 2.1 speakers i can think of is the Altec Lansing 121i costs around 1K,So U have the remaining 4K for the printer which i have no idea on which model to get.Hope i Helped ya.
Regards

hmmm, was myself thinking about the 965 mobo.

ok,say i have 5k left then.
here's what i was planning:
HP 2360 printer-Rs.2,350
Altec Lansing ATP3 or Logitech X230 speakers-Rs.2,650
or
HP F380 all-in-one(Rs.4,500) and forget the speakers.

the scan function is not a priority and i have heard that budget all-in-one's have poor performance and reliabilty.is this true?
plus,i really want to upgrade the speakers.so is the HP 2360 printer good or is there any other option?which of the above mentioned Logitech or Altec speakers is better?
