I'm surprised none of them posted about the new structure which was inaugurated yesterday at DXB. :P

For the uninitiated, it is Burj Khalifa previously known as the Burj Dubai, standing tall at 828m. It has quite a few records under its name apart from being the tallest structure itself!

Here're a couple of links which should be a good read for TP:

Visit the Burj Dubai -- The Tallest Building in the World

Burj Khalifa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thing is, I'd seen the piling progressing during Jan 2005 and a huge proportion of the land being cleared left me stunned. This should be a landmark for DXB for quite sometime until some country manages to beat the record. :P

The Arabs are devouring all the oil for lunch, breakfast and dinner. Wonder what happens when they run out of it. :P

I expect such a building to be made in India in 2100 or may be even half height or may be i am expecting too much.

Was going through the same articles. Magnificent structure.

There are residential sections too in this building. Wonder who has bought homes here.

Had heard some bollywood stalwarts buy houses in Dubai .. is this the same building ???

^We cannot underestimate our engineering potential Raks! Having seen the DMRC, I've been very impressed! Compared to other metro corps in the cities, we can be proud of this one. Hats off to E. Sreedharan, the Metro Man - brain child behind the DMRC and the Konkan Railway; in fact a lot many projects executed under him. :)

Under an able visionary and a leader like him, engineering marvels like these are probably a joke!

@ranjitpai - not sure but SRK has got a home in the Palm Islands. Haven't heard of anyone who owns a residence here.

I guess he is not underestimating the potential but the time taken to make effective use of this potential. We only talk about potential but not about putting it to better use.

that was supposed to happen in hyderabad ...dont know the current status of it , other than that there is couple more 100+ floors coming up in mumbai

You do realize that the economy is Dubai just got whooped big time? All these major infrastructural development projects have been among the main reasons for this.
From what I remember reading, they've managed to sell barely 50 odd % of the floorspace in Burj Dubai. Plus afair, it hasn't even been completed fully. Some sections are still being worked on, at a much slower pace.

I really appreciate the DelhiM Metro and how it was constructed. I think it was also featured in megastructres (NGC). But i think i read / heard / i dont know somewhere that almost no or minimal RED TAPE was involved in this which made it a success story. Agreed that metro is now being made in almost all major cities but red tape is the biggest hindrance.

Although i should not compare but China too is a developing nation like us but see, they have two of the tallest building in the world (Shanghai world financial center and Jinmao Towers) and an even taller structure is in making. Its not only about tall structures but massive scale of construction and effective use of resources in timely manner. I was very impressed by the excellent planning the city of Shanghai has done and it is for there to see. They actually have a sightseeing building where old to modern shanghai is modelled and what the future holds for the city as far as infrastructure goes.

While I appreciate the beauty of such a monument, I cannot help but think about the obscene amount of money and exploitation of labour that goes into such projects in the middle east...not to mention the power requirements to sustain operations for such monolithic structures. And if you see the way our poorer brethren are treated in these places, you will get a whole new perspective on human rights.

These masses of concrete created in a desert are extremely difficult to build and very expensive to maintain and from what I hear, they just keep on constructing even if there is no requirement.

They are just about the most wasteful people on the planet. You want to save the earth from global warming, I think the middle east would be a good place to start.

Middle East nations aren't stopping these construction because they are the only ones free from highjacked plane attacks. This tower too should be rammed like WTC. Perhaps, even more violently. (Make no mistake).

^^ what a load of nonsense ... this thread started to talk about an engineering marvel and you want planes to hit them , seriously just dont type anything that comes into your head

expecting too much. Its not like developed countries will stop making buildings by 2100 to give India a chance :P
