Buying an old fat ps3. Worth it?

Hi,

I buying a fat 80 GB non BC model, for about 140 USD. I live in India and a new one is about 250 $ (12gig superslim)

I plan to use it for as long as possible, I'm a huge PS fan, and I still haven't played any games on the platform yet. I am a student, so I have absolutely no money at all. Just some savings.

I will get a new laptop in about a year or something, when I move to Europe for higher studies. I might not use the ps3 as much then. But I'd still keep it, coz I never throwaway my consoles.

The guy who's selling it to me, says he's had it for about 3 years now, he barely uses it. I don't know about that as one of the controllers in the picture he sent me, has no rubber layer on one of the analogue sticks. So I don't know about the usage stats.

He's willing to drive about 1.5 hours to sell me his console.

If you guys think its worth it, can you tell me what all I should check before I make the purchase? Is there a way of knowing that the unit is fully functional, and will be for at least an year?
He says the ps3 has never been opened and the seal is still intact.
Can you guys tell me the failure rate of fat ps3s in Indian conditions?
Also, what is cost of repairing it if it does die on me?
Thanks for your help.
