Hi Guys,

My friend is buying a new laptop and he has finalized on the Dell XPS 15. Now he is stuck in selecting the final configuration. Is it worth spending 22k and upgrading the CPU from 2630QM to 2820QM?

He will be using the laptop for gaming and running VMWares and movies. It would be great if you guys could point me in the right direction here..:)

Thanks

In a word - NO!!!

For his needs the upgrade will not give him 22k worth extra performance. The i7 2630qm in itself is a beast and nobody except the most demanding users will find its performance "inadequate". Still if its for bragging rights, then get the 2720qm. 2720qm makes more sense than 2820qm.

But overall I would say stick with 2630qm. Its more than powerful enough for his needs

i had similar dilemma when i was going to place an order a month earlier, after reading multiple threads i ordered i7 2630..there is a lot of discussion regarding this on notebookcheck forums, you might go through them

Why would anyone need 1080p res. on a measly 15" of real estate? Is the difference even worth it?

Very true,
Instead invest in a faster HDD / RAM and GPU and use the wireless display to watch all Full HD content on ur big screen LCD displays. Its a small $80 addon.

Because 1080p displays are not just about resolution. Quality wise they are in a different league compared to 720p screens
The displays use the same LED backlit TN panel AFAIK. Pixel density is higher for the 1080p one but is the price paid worth the difference is my query. And what is the quality that you are referring to here? Picture quality?

^^

Just because all displays use same LED back lighting and TN panels does not mean that all displays will be same. Usually all 720p panels are low quality panels with poor viewing angles, low contrast and washed out colors. Most 1080p panels (except MSI 1080p screens which are same as any 720p screen) use high quality TN panels with better viewing angles, much higher contrast, deep blacks, and accurate colors. So yes it is definitely worth it. Once you get a 1080p screen its hard to go back to a 720p.

BIG difference.

stick to 2630QM, get 8 GB RAM for VMWare and 1080p display for movies , GPU is your choice, either 525M or 540M wont make much difference

yes, very much so, (unless you use a CUI and do coding all the time )

Gannu there is a lot of difference between these 720P and 1080P laptop displays and i am not talking about resolution, the overall PQ is much better in every aspect, i have personally observed this difference :)

Well...he has decided to go with the Full HD screen offered by Dell after reading through the recommendations made by many for the same.

And regarding the Memory, he has finalized for going with 8GB.

The HP model was left out of consideration due to the mixed opinions for the product like heating issues, support and so on..

And he like the Dell design too..

Yes, lot more detail, browsing is such a nice experience with high resolution screens, take Smart Phones for example.

Its not only the resolution as RS4 mentioned its the brightness, black and white levels and the color gamuts where the XPS FHD screen excel and is among the best in the business. Check the Notebookcheck and Anandtech reviews.
